Louisiana State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President of Strategic Communications (VPSC) who will serve as a senior aide to the President of LSU, as well as the chief communications officer for the university, reporting directly to the President. Serving as the President's advisor, the VPSC is responsible for helping the President shape his strategic communications activities and developing and maintaining a plan to provide an organizational context for national events and trends in education, research, and educational funding. Most importantly, the VPSC will provide creative and research support to the President to foster his vision for LSU.


The VPSC will closely follow political and technological developments related to education on national and state levels selecting subjects that will provide the President with a platform to help form public opinion on higher education. Utilizing an in-depth knowledge of public policy for education and financing, the VPSC will manage the design of communications to further the creation of coalitions, partnerships, and support groups necessary to meet LSU's primary goals.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The VPSC will assist with the creation and strategic dissemination of the President's vision of higher education's responsibility within Louisiana and throughout the nation through research, writing, editing, and collaboration and will provide advice and counsel to the President with opportunities articulating LSU's social and economic contributions to Louisiana. She/he will design and lead all entities of LSU in its use of all forms of media both for external promotional activities and internal information.


In addition to serving the President, this position will be expected to assist senior executives of the university and the Board of Supervisors in shaping their communications to various communities and constituencies guaranteeing consistency with the President's statements, speeches, and written communications.

The VPSC will in particular provide personal communications support to the President during times requiring crisis communication.


The VPSC is responsible for the overall communication, research-based messaging, marketing, and branding activity for all LSU campuses, institutes, colleges, and schools. Through the supervision of the Associate Vice President for Communications and University Relations (AVP), the VPSC will manage the communications operation for the Flagship A&M campus in Baton Rouge, the Public Relations function, internal communications, crisis communications, media relations, marketing and branding.


Finally, the VPSC will take on the role of coordinating the flow of information into the President's Office so that priorities are set in line with the strategies and plans prescribed by the senior administration.


Required Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree.



At least 12 years of experience within the field of higher education, journalism, political, or high level corporate communications, in positions in which creative communications are required to further public policy and ideas. Professional experience in the creation of strategies and policies, and the creative skills necessary to develop compelling presentations, speeches, and organizational communiqués is expected. Demonstrated experience with media relations, government relations, communications, informational campaigns, and social media is a requirement.
