Job Description:

The School of Sciences and Engineering at the American University in Cairo has openings for four faculty positions within its Chemistry Department at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor.

As part of their teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will contribute to teaching and research in the undergraduate major and graduate degrees, inclusive of interdisciplinary masters and PhD programs. In addition, the successful candidate(s) will be encouraged to develop and/or teach course(s) in their area of expertise. The School is home to programs in Natural Sciences and Engineering. The School is also home to programs and centers in Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, and Environmental Engineering. Five centers are housed in the School. In addition, the School and University are embarking on initiatives that focus on community engagement in health and safety and nanomedicine to complement its ongoing activities in diagnostics, therapeutics, food science and environmental sustainability.

The successful candidate for any of these positions is expected to be active or capable of developing research and provide services in his/her field of specialization.

Food Chemistry and Nutrition: The primary expectations from the faculty in this position will be contribution to teaching of graduate courses in the Chemistry MSc program with a concentration in Food Chemistry and Nutrition as well as introductory and upper level chemistry undergraduate courses. He/she is expected to supervise graduate and undergraduate students in their research theses and have international exposure in teaching or research. Of particular interest are candidates with experience in one or more of the areas of food safety assurance, sensory evaluation, food analysis, food industry and who can participate in collaborative advanced research in food chemistry and nutrition.

Organic/Medicinal Chemistry: The primary expectation of the faculty in this position will be contribution to teaching of graduate courses in the Chemistry MSc program as well as introductory and upper level chemistry undergraduate courses, specifically Organic Chemistry. He/she is expected to supervise graduate and undergraduate students in their research theses and have international exposure in teaching and research pertinent to synthetic chemistry, pharmaceutics and drug development, natural products or modeling and informatics.

Physical/Theoretical Chemistry: The primary expectation of the faculty in this position will be contribution to teaching of graduate courses in the Chemistry MSc program as well as introductory and upper level chemistry undergraduate courses. He/she is expected to supervise graduate and undergraduate students in their research theses and have international exposure in teaching or research relevant to Physical Chemistry, physico-chemical characterization of complex compounds and mixtures, anthropogenic and man-made nanoparticles and recycled materials.

Analytical/Environmental Chemistry: The primary expectation of the faculty in this position will be contribution to teaching of graduate courses in the Chemistry MSc program as well as introductory and upper level chemistry undergraduate courses. He/she is expected to supervise graduate and undergraduate students in their research theses and have international exposure in teaching or research relevant to analytical chemistry, analytical toxicology and/or environmental chemistry. Candidates who embrace interdisciplinary and implementation science relevant to understanding and providing sustainable solutions in prevention and remediation are strongly encouraged to apply. The faculty will participate in initiatives and collaborative research among faculty in biomedical sciences, engineering, public health and centers of environmental sustainability to address major health and environmental challenges. Applicants conducting research that is cross-cutting and bridges with biological/health sciences/environmental engineering (e.g. air, water, soil and biospecimen toxicology) with chemical analytics are among those that are strongly encouraged to apply.


Requirements:

All candidates for the positions above must hold a doctoral degree and experience related to one of the fields cited above. He/she should have a demonstrated track-record of practice, teaching and/or research. A solid record of professional practical experience and established record in attracting funded research and scholarship is highly desirable. We seek applicants who are enthusiastic about their profession and undergraduate and graduate education with classroom and/or laboratory teaching experience, and are highly motivated researchers capable of leading a project and training students with passion and enthusiasm. Translational experience beyond the didactic is highly desirable, as are demonstrable evidence of interdisciplinary interests and collaboration.
