Senior/Lead Finance Technology Specialist

Smith College seeks a Senior/Lead Finance Technology Specialist to provide operational and strategic support for the suite of IT tools and services that support the mission of the Finance office, in coordination with Information Technology Services (ITS). Serve as lead for finance report writing and maintaining departmental website content.  Suggest improvements to processes and technology and actively participate in the finance continuous improvement efforts. As a member of the Finance team, responsible for building and maintaining positive working relationships with team members, central information technology services, internal customers and external vendors. As a member of the distributed IT community coordinated by ITS, responsible for representing Finance office needs in all aspects of IT service management, for planning for relevant training for Finance office users, for effective functional implementation of IT projects in the finance area, and for performing work in line with established IT principles and practices.


Systems Support & Project Management: Oversee day to day as well as long term operations of the ERP system (currently Banner) including general ledger, accounts receivable, payroll, purchasing and accounts payable. Determine, design, and implement appropriate additions, enhancements and procedural guidelines to the ERP as applicable, in line with established IT principles and practices and in coordination with ITS. Sit on various committees that are directly or indirectly related to the use of the ERP modules for which s/he is responsible. Develop and maintain appropriate documentation for the procedures used in administering the functions of the ERP, in line with established IT practices. Provide training and support for additional campus systems including sub-ledgers maintained by other departments, commercial card platform, endowment software, POS systems, and other system integration matters. Provide management and leadership for relevant projects.


Reporting & Web Administration: Utilize finance and other modules including general ledger, accounts receivable, payroll, accounts payable, purchasing, budget and grants for reports and audits using data warehouse and relational database technology. In line with IT principles and practices, produce custom and standard reports for Finance and other college offices; support and maintain relational databases and other systems used by Finance (currently includes Microsoft the Access and Cognos reporting systems); and design and test information feeds to and from outside vendors and systems. Maintain the finance, controller’s office, grants office, and VP for Finance web pages. Work with Finance staff to ensure that the website information is current and site navigation functions smoothly. Monitor pages for proper functioning; identify and implement additions to the service and functionality of the site.

Administration: Keep current with technology, finance, and compliance trends/legislation through attending seminars and through both published and on-line government, regulatory and trade documents. Perform related duties as required. Back up other staff needs as necessary. Provide training and technical support to the finance and other staff as necessary.

Collaboration with ITS: Participate in regular distributed IT staff meetings and in IT community planning relevant to Finance office IT operations. Participate in operational and strategic IT planning for the Finance office. Model IT principles and practices in all aspects of IT-related work; and identify areas within Finance office IT operations that need support, more strategic planning, or project work to be aligned with core mission and IT practices.


Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 5 - 7 years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Banner, Access, and Cognos experience preferred.  Coursework or functional knowledge of accounting and business processes preferred. Documented experience managing projects and ensuring effective project and service implementation across distributed teams and staff who do not have a reporting relationship to the incumbent. Documented experience ensuring effective IT support and training across functional teams.

Skills: This role requires a combination of strong technical and soft/organizational skills. Strong project management skills, Strong computer skills, MS Office Suite; advanced skills with integrated database technology, Excel, Access and Cognos; advanced web content design skills. Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; strong attention to detail and accuracy; strong quantitative skills; good judgment, discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to interact with diverse constituencies; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to work on a team and independently; competent project management skills and a comfort with continuous improvement.

Required to have a broad and deep expertise in the application of IT tools and services for Finance, thoughtful attention to detail, timely and appropriately calibrated follow-up, proactive and constructive problem solving, and for building effective partnerships with Finance office and ITS colleagues. S/he is able to calibrate short-term and long-term needs effectively and translate those needs into plans and recommendations that can be explored and coordinated with colleagues, resulting in improved IT projects and services. Through his/her work with Finance and ITS, the members of the Office of Finance have an appropriate suite of tools, with the level of training, support, reporting and analytics needed to achieve the goals of the Office in the near- and longer-term.
