The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation Fellowship in Retinal Degeneration Research has been created to support researchers early in their career who can both learn from and contribute to advancing the work in retinal degeneration at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute. The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation Fellow in Retinal Degeneration Research will learn from a world class team of retinal disease specialists to develop pioneering tools and treatments for macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and other age related conditions. Experience with tissue culture techniques, pharmo-toxicology and molecular techniques for gene expression, along with DNA and protein analyses are desirable. Experience in handling animals is preferable but not required.

The project will involve applying this knowledge base and skill sets to culture human retinal cells that can be used to screen novel and promising cytoprotective drugs/agents that can prolong cellular longevity with the ultimate goal to reverse or block potentially blinding eye diseases. Follow up experiments will be to test the drugs/agents on animal models of retinal degeneration. The fellowship duration is two years.
