Position Summary: The Department of Allied Health Sciences, Center for Literacy and Disability Studies in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a full-time Research Assistant Professor position. The successful candidate will undertake major roles in ongoing research addressing early literacy and symbolic communication development among students with significant cognitive disabilities (Tar Heel Shared Reader) (US Dept of Ed/OPSEP #H327S160005). The successful candidate will participate in research activities (securing funding and carrying out funded projects), as well as professional development and dissemination efforts at the pre-professional and professional levels. Candidates should possess a PhD in speech and language, special education, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working with children with disabilities; a demonstrated commitment to working with an interdisciplinary team; and a record of research and publication in areas related to literacy, symbolic communication, and students with significant cognitive disabilities. This position offers outstanding opportunities for scholarly activities, teaching and research as a member of the faculty of the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies. This research-intensive fixed-term faculty position will remain open until filled.

Qualification and Experience: Ideal candidates will possess experience working with children with disabilities, expertise in early symbolic communication and literacy development, and experience conducting research with children with disabilities. Formal training in speech and language, special education, or a related field is required.
