Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Mathematics and Physics within the College of Arts and Sciences promotes North Carolina Central University’s commitment to excellence in instruction, research, and service offering programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Science degree and the Master of Science degree each in mathematics and in physics. The Department has a teaching and research agenda that fosters computational and technological literacy, critical analysis and analytical thinking; and effective communication of scientific ideas through writing and presentation to develop essential skills that students need for productive careers as scientists, academicians, entrepreneurs and professional leaders.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Department now offers an Engineering Physics Concentration to its Physics degree and 3-plus-2 dual degree programs in Mathematics/Physics and Engineering in collaboration with NC State. The current dual degree programs are: (1) B.S in Physics from NCCU and B.S. in Electrical Engineering from NC State; (2) B.S in Physics from NCCU and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from NC State. In addition, the department was recently approved to offer Mathematics with Computational and Engineering Mathematics (CEMA), and Physics with Engineering Physics (EPHY).
The purpose of this Mathematics/Physics-Engineering Academic Advisor and Instructor is to assist in delivery of a “holistic” approach to assuring retention through providing multiple strategies of academic support to and enrichment and research and work opportunities for Mathematics/Physics-Engineering students at NCCU.
The position also implements and coordinates summer bridge and other summer enrichment programs and activities for incoming and continuing engineering students at NCCU.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Thorough understanding of the goals and objectives of the NCCU Mathematics/Physics-Engineering Academic programs
• Substantive knowledge of academic program procedures, methods, and practices
• Ability to select, train, and supervise undergraduate and graduate students mentors and tutors
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates
• Ability to record, compile, summarize, and analyze data
• Ability to communicate and express ideas
• Ability to function independently of regular supervision
• Ability to provide instruction in introductory physics or mathematics, using evidence-based or research-based pedagogical strategies.
Master’s degree in Physics, Mathematics, or related Engineering; and 5 years of experience delivering support services in a STEM educational setting.
