Position Summary: This research associate position will coordinate a project aimed at determining the role of the protein alpha-synuclein in enteric nervous system dysfunction, particularly as it relates to Parkinson's disease. This project will involve the analysis of peripheral nervous system pathology and physiology. Methodology will include electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and ex vivo outcome measures performed on enteric nervous system whole mounts. The fellow will also be involved in the cloning and manufacture of recombinant Adeno-associated virus (rAAV). The research associate will participate in the day to day operations of the research lab; duties will include collaborative experimental design, conducting experimental laboratory work, analyzing and writing up results for publication in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, some supervisory responsibilities will be provided, as well as opportunities to learn about current laboratory operations, including animal survival surgery, animal behavioral testing, experimental subject euthanasia, post-mortem analyses of tissue sample preparation; tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, etc. This position is located at 333 Bostwick Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI.

Faculty: Minimum Qualifications Support Staff: Minimum Requirements Doctoral degree in natural sciences and at least four years of experience working in a basic science laboratory. Skills required includes a strong background in molecular biology including cloning, gene expression/PCR, protein expression, breeding and screening of transgenic mice, experience with creating, and handling, viral vectors, data generation and handling, data interpretation, writing up laboratory procedures and results, supervision of students, software usage. Experience with small animal handling, animal surgeries, primary neuronal cell culture, immunohistochemistry, neurophysiology, and microscopy are a plus. Good command of written and spoken English is required.

Typing Requirements (wpm):

Desired Qualifications: Advanced molecular biology techniques such as cloning, recombinant protein production, and protein analysis. Electrophysiology and/or calcium imaging. Knowledge of brain anatomy, enteric nervous system function, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry and microscopy, specifically in fluorescence immunolabeling; animal handling, survival surgery, behavioral testing.
