University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), a comprehensive Catholic university centered in San Antonio, Texas, invites inquiries, applications and nominations for the position of President.

Founded by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1881, the University remains an important sponsored ministry of the Congregation. UIW strives to educate men and women who will become concerned and enlightened citizens with values developed through a Catholic and Judeo-Christian tradition. The University welcomes individuals of all faiths and creeds.

With a global enrollment of 11,422 students, UIW is the largest Catholic university in Texas and the third-largest private university in the state. It offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate fields of study, including Ph.Ds. in education and vision science and doctoral degrees in pharmacy, optometry, nursing practice, physical therapy and business administration. UIW will open a School of Osteopathic Medicine this summer, which will be one of just six medical schools in the U.S. located at a Catholic university. UIW’s faculty includes 400 full-time members and 800 part-time members. About 70% of full-time faculty members hold a terminal degree, and they serve students, on average, at a ratio of 14:1.

The University’s enrollment reflects the diversity of South Texas. Approximately 60% of the students are from racial or ethnic minority groups, and UIW is No.1 nationally among not-for-profit private universities in the conferring of bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics. International students from 74 countries comprise 28% of the global enrollment. Seventy-five percent of the students depend upon financial aid. Approximately one-third of the students are first-generation college attendees. The undergraduate retention rate on the main campus is 77%. Fifteen percent of undergraduate students are considered to be non-traditional students.

UIW operates eleven sites in Texas, two campuses in Mexico, and study centers in Germany and France. UIW also manages two private high schools in San Antonio.

UIW has an endowment of $130 million and an annual budget of $217 million. The University is a member of the NCAA Division I Southland Conference.

Desired Presidential Attributes

The Presidential Search Committee seeks a proven leader who embraces, respects and can effectively articulate the mission of UIW as a Catholic institution committed to academic excellence, intellectual freedom, equality, tolerance, and the rights of all individuals. Preference will be given to a Catholic candidate with a terminal academic degree, but full consideration will be given to all who apply.

Other characteristics sought by the search committee include intellectual and professional accomplishments consistent with an institution of higher education; impeccable integrity; a record of successful leadership, including participation in comprehensive fundraising activities; ability to manage a complex university environment, including an understanding of the international education environment; respect for shared governance; a willingness to engage in collaborative relationships with students and faculty; demonstrable record in promoting diversity and inclusion; strong external relations and community engagement; superb communication skills; well-developed fiscal and management skills; excellence in human relations; forthrightness in working with a Board; creative problem solving; and a positive, open, and affirming attitude that leads and inspires others.

Search Process and Timeline

Nominations, applications and inquiries may be sent in confidence. Full consideration will be given to applications received by March 10, 2017. Application materials, which should include a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, and full contact information of five references – who will not be contacted without permission – must be electronically submitted to the following email address: UIWPresident@academic-search.com.
