Additional responsibilities include preparation of experimental materials and insect sample identification and processing. The selected candidate will need a technical scientific background and, following instruction, the ability to operate independently, reliably, and with great attention to detail. The expected position duration is approximately nine (9) months with the possibility of continued employment based on funding availability from grants. The selected candidate's standard work schedule will be 20 hours per week distributed Monday through Friday. Some sampling dates may additionally fall on weekends. During field research trips, this position requires traveling outside of normal working hours.

Minimum Requirements: Two (2) years of college-level coursework in a life science or one (1) year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; knowledge and abilities necessary for successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Experience with field research, including travel to field sites, setting up experimental protocols, monitoring insect populations, and collecting samples for projects with an insect pest management, biological control, or similarly related theme. Experience collecting, sorting, counting, and/or identifying samples for insect species, life-stages, parasitism status, or natural enemies (especially for ants and sap-feeding hemipteran pests or within an agricultural environment). Experience keeping detailed, accurate, and organized records of experimental protocols and data collected and processed in the field and laboratory. Experience using field and laboratory equipment, including vehicles, stereo microscopes, vacuum-samplers, aspirators, counters, timers, shovels, temperature monitors, chemistry glassware, burners, freezers, scales, computers, and computer software such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. Knowledge of and compliance with all applicable laboratory safety procedures and regulations. Can work dependably under general direction and successfully complete field and laboratory assignments with self-motivation, accuracy, and diligence. Has interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact with a variety of personality types and positions (e.g., faculty members, post-doctoral researchers, graduate researchers, undergraduate research assistants, growers, university employees, etc.). Has a flexible, accommodating schedule that can adapt to date or time adjustments as necessitated by field project condition variability (e.g., weather, field site irrigation or treatments). Valid driver's license and willingness to operate a personal, university, or approved rental vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology, entomology, botany, or environmental science. Twelve (12) months of field research experience with monitoring insect activity or collecting and processing insect samples. Detailed or working knowledge of insect identification and taxonomy. Detailed or working knowledge of pest management and biological control concepts. Experience maintaining insect colonies in laboratory settings.
