The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to teaching basic skills through transfer-level composition. They will also demonstrate an interest in teaching students with varied academic objectives and levels of preparation. The English Department is committed to working together with faculty in other disciplines toward these objectives and to supplementing the traditional curriculum, where appropriate, with innovative use of instructional delivery and technologies, including computer assisted composition.

Start date of this assignment: Fall 2017

Minimum Qualifications:

• Possession of a Master’s degree or above in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR a Bachelor’s degree in any of the above subject areas AND a Master’s degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism OR the equivalent (see information below)
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Preference will be given to candidates with:
1. Successful experience in teaching or evidence of preparation to teach the full range of college English, including developmental reading and writing, integrated/accelerated reading and composition, transfer-level composition, and literature
2. Certificate in Teaching Post-Secondary Reading or the equivalent
3. Commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
4. Experience using diverse teaching methods to address the needs of students with differing abilities and levels of preparation
5. Experience motivating students from a broad spectrum of cultural, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds
6. Training and experience teaching online and using technology in the classroom
7. Creative and engaging teaching style
8. Excellent oral and written communication skills
9. Experience completing sound statistical analysis at the course, department and program level
10. A love of literature
