Research Engineer- Wind Turbine/Mechanical Drive System Testing

Clemson University was selected by the US DOE to build a large wind turbine drive train test facility to provide testing services to the wind industry with the goal of improving reliability and reducing the cost of energy delivered. The facility was built at the Clemson University Restoration Institute located at the Charleston Naval Complex in North Charleston, SC. The mission of the facility is to provide high quality testing services to the wind turbine industry for testing of up to 15 MW turbines, drive trains, generators, and/or gearboxes.
The Research Engineer will be part of a team for hands-on day-to-day operation, maintenance, and trouble-shooting of the test center equipment including the 7.5MW and 15MW wind turbine dynamometers, the 15MW grid simulator, and customer devices under test. This position requires an individual with a good understanding of and experience in testing of mechanical systems, a commitment to safety and environmental stewardship, outstanding interpersonal skills, excellent organization skills, strong engineering background and sound business acumen. The Test Engineer will work closely with end-users of the facility to safely meet their testing requirements.
25% - Essential - Testing:
Supports test campaign readiness preparation, execute test plans and report test results. Investigates and analyzes test data from both test bench and Customer test specimen.
20% - Essential - Electro-mechanical equipment:
Works with electro-mechanical hardware, equipment troubleshooting, maintenance and upgrades. This involves hands on work to solve complex technical issues on a daily base.
20% - Essential - Controls:
Installs, configures, calibrates, and troubleshoots sensors, data acquisition systems, PLCs, and motor drives.
20% - Essential - Technical Project Management:
Creates test plans, maintains planning, scheduling, tasks management and cost estimates. Supports communication, manages relationships and leads meetings with Customers, internal and external stakeholders
15% - Essential - Safety:
Completes required safety training. Performs safety task analysis (STA) on non-routine tasks. Identify and control discovered hazards. Works toward compliance with safety rules and regulations.
• A minimum of a BS in Electrical or Mechanical engineering degree from an accredited university, college or institution of higher learning. Strong educational and practicing background in mechanical systems testing, design and integration.
• Solid understanding of power systems and requirements of working around large electrical and stored energy mechanical systems.
• Experience in data acquisition, sensors, test protocol development, test equipment development and implementation.
• Good understanding of safety regulations related to large scale testing and industrial facilities.
Valid driver's license with acceptable driiving record

Standard Hrs: 37.5; Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Employees who are in time limited positions will earn one and one-quarter days of Annual and Sick Leave per month for a total of thirty (30) days per year. Eligible part-timers will earn days on a pro rata basis.
