Position Summary

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) seeks an experienced, innovative and collaborative Dean of University Libraries to provide strategic leadership and direction for one of the most valued institutions on its campus. The recent appointments of Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam and Provost Dana Dunn, along with several Deans, have invigorated the University as it charts a new course in its quest to meet the changing educational needs of North Carolinians. The next Dean of University Libraries will be a transformational leader during this exciting time for UNCG. This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished and visionary individual to join an ascendant university that values and depends on the Libraries as its greatest hub for student learning, its central archive, and the intellectual nerve center of the campus.

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of University Libraries will serve as the chief administrative officer for the Libraries, with a staff of 89 and average annual expenditures of approximately $11M. Responsible for all programs and unit activities within the Libraries, the Dean leads planning, administration, fundraising, and personnel efforts to further sustain and improve Library operations and services. The next Dean of University Libraries will successfully develop and execute a vision to further the mission and value of the Libraries in a time when technology and the needs of students are rapidly changing. S/he will develop and inspire a strong, loyal and service-oriented staff while effectively managing and enhancing the Libraries' fiscal resources. The next Dean will continue to creatively maximize the existing physical space and library facilities while developing a long-term strategy for space renovation and renewal. In addition they will expand library services beyond its physical walls through remote and 'just in time' support access to meet the needs of UNCG's growing body of distance and non-traditional students.

Ideal candidates will have an ALA accredited MLIS or the equivalent, as well as a successful record of demonstrated library leadership including the effective management of physical, fiscal and human resources. In addition, they will have a distinguished record of librarianship and scholarly achievement deserving of tenure; and the leadership and interpersonal skills to engage staff, faculty and campus administration to build upon the Libraries' solid foundation and tackle new challenges.



Minimum Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have an ALA-accredited MLIS or the equivalent, as well as a successful record of demonstrated library leadership including the effective management of physical, fiscal and human resources. In addition, s/he will have a distinguished record of librarianship and scholarly achievement deserving of tenure; and the leadership and interpersonal skills to engage staff, faculty and campus administration to build upon the Libraries' solid foundation and tackle new challenges.
