Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) is an institutional center located at NC State University. Chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1978, ITRE conducts surface and air transportation research, training, and technical support activities for municipal, state, federal, and international clients in order to address critical transportation issues. ITRE is committed to developing leadership in its study of transportation issues through fostering analytical thinking, integrating technology in education and research, serving as a catalyst for problem solving, and cultivating professionals and students dedicated to excellence in transportation. ITRE's strategic plan sets forth five major institute-wide goals: - Increase national visibility; - Conduct and disseminate research that -impacts the transportation community; - Sustain and enhance educational opportunities to improve the knowledge and skills of transportation professionals; - Strengthen the relationship with, and gain recognition within, the University system; and - Provide superior technical assistance. These goals are being achieved through various objectives such as increasing the Institute's national exposure through conference presentations, published research and outreach efforts, and through increased national project awards. Additionally, ITRE continually expands its training efforts across North Carolina, the United States, and the globe, while promoting collaboration with faculty in the department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University and at other UNC system institutions.

Essential Job Duties: The Research Associate will assist the Director in developing and managing ITRE's North Carolina Airport Technical Assistance Program. NC AirTAP was launched in 2016 to support the state's public- and private-sector airport professionals. The program is being developed to help NC airports improve the safety, quality and efficiency of their operations and to increase the use of new aviation materials, practices and technology. NC AirTAP will also help airport staff build a community network for exchanging best practices. The Research Associate will assist the Director in providing educational offerings, information outreach and technical assistance fpr AirTAP. In addition, the Research Associate will occasionally provide on-site training at ITRE.

Minimum Education/Experience: Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering or a related field and a minimum of three years of relevant experience are required.

Department Required Skills: - Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint - Ability to work independently and conduct research and project tasks - Ability to communicate well (verbal and written) with project and program team members and project sponsors - Strong interpersonal skills - Demonstrated teaching and classroom presentation skills. - Technical knowledge related to the position, project management, and demonstrated understanding of road maintenance operations and procedures. - Experience managing the tasks of others. The incumbent will be required to travel to various sites/locations within NC to complete the core functions of the position.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: A relevant Master's degree. Additional degree in Public Administration or equivalent is a plus. At least five years of progressive engineering experience. Prefer at least five years of relevant experience with a combination of experience in airport/aviation operations, road maintenance operations and asset management. Supervisory and project management experience. Knowledge of airport/aviation, road maintenance and asset management.

Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Professional Engineering license in NC or the ability to obtain such within one year of employment. This license must be maintained as a condition of employment.
