About The Unit: The Chicago Language Center (CLC) is the hub for language pedagogy at the University of Chicago. The CLC supports and sustains the instruction of more than 50 languages with its state-of-the-art facilities and by providing ongoing research and materials development. The CLC staff includes specialists in technology, curriculum development and assessment, and is available to advise and consult with all UChicago instructors and professors. The CLC inaugurated the Summer Language Institute (SLI) in Summer 2014, and initiated the English Language Institute (ELI) for international students at UChicago in Summer 2015.

Unit Job Summary: During the Summer Quarter 2017, the Humanities Division may have Language Assistant and Course Assistant opportunities available in the Summer Language Institute. Positions may be available in some or all of the following languages: Arabic, Aymara, Chinese, French, German, Ancient Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. Duties include: Leading up to 2 hours of language instruction daily, Monday through Friday, beginning June 19, 2017 Daily coordination with Lecturer for delivery of additional instruction and assignments Attending planning meetings prior to start of program (June 14-16) Participation in delivery and grading of placement tests, as necessary Collaboration with lecturers, co-lecturers, language assistants, SLI Director and/or summer Language Coordinator to prepare a complete course syllabus including a statement of course goals and objectives, an outline of all assignments and student expectations, a schedule of assignment deadlines and exams, a list required materials, and program policies, to be filed with the SLI Director prior to the start of classes Preparation of daily lessons and activities to develop all skills in the target language Coordination with other lecturers, co-lecturers, language assistants, SLI Director and/or summer Language Coordinator on development and grading of assignments and exams Reporting regularly to SLI Director and/or summer Language Coordinator on student learning progress We seek experienced and diverse applicants with a documented record of successful language instruction. Unit Education: Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in language teaching, language area, or related field strongly preferred.

Unit Experience: Prior language-instruction experience in the target language at the university or four-year college level preferred Native or near-native ability in the target language preferred Previous experience in an intensive summer program preferred
