Reporting to the Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students, the Assistant Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Campus Life (AVP/Dean) provides visionary, strategic, leadership for student experiences that provide value and encourage student learning outside the classroom, including nationally-recognized initiatives for residence life, fraternity and sorority life, service learning and community engagement, and gender and LGBTQIA programs. The AVP/Dean engages with university senior leaders and faculty to implement the university’s vision for the campus student experience, guided by university initiatives for enhancing the residential campus, intellectual climate, social climate and out-of-class engagement, and inclusive community; advises the Vice President on key campus life initiatives, including program development, policy implementation, facilities planning, and risk management; serves on the senior leadership team for Student Life, sharing responsibility for leading the Division of Student Life and implementing the Student Life Five Year Plan and annual priorities of the Division and the University; and leads collaboratively with faculty and staff from departments across the campus to create a seamless and highly stimulating learning experience for students throughout their four years at Elon. The AVP/Dean oversees a budget of $4.5 million and provides direct supervision, guidance and support to 4 department directors, 1 program coordinator, and 1 administrative assistant, and indirectly supports an additional 26 professional staff, 4 graduate assistants, and more than 150 student staff.

A master’s degree in higher education administration, student personnel or an academic discipline and at least 10 years of progressive leadership experience in one or more student affairs functional areas, at least five of which must be at the level of director or above, are required. A doctorate or other terminal degree is preferred. The ideal candidate will also possess demonstrated transformational leadership skills; experience with engaged learning and high impact practices; the ability to apply theory to practice, including student development, identity formation learning theory, leadership, and group dynamics; the ability to articulate a vision and take steps necessary to actualize organizational goals; cultural competence and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion; strong skills with administrative writing, interpersonal communication, and presenting; demonstrated experience building partnerships and relating effectively with diverse constituents including students, faculty, senior staff, parents, alumni, trustees, and leaders in the profession; and experience with staff supervision and development, strategic planning, assessment and evaluation, and data-driven decision making.
