Associate Vice President, Human Resources

Reporting to the Vice President for Administration and Finance, the Associate Vice President for Human Resources (AVP-HR) provides strategic leadership, planning, implementation, and operational excellence for Human Resources at Emerson College. Overseeing a team of twelve, the AVP-HR is responsible for the functions and services delivered by the HR department (including talent acquisition and workforce planning, compensation and benefits administration, employee and labor relations/collective bargaining, performance management, leadership and employee development, employee health and wellness, and compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements). Additionally, AVP-HR oversees the HR Service Center, created in 2016 to provide service excellence to the Emerson community as a first point-of-contact for Emerson HR.
The AVP-HR directly supervises a team of four directors: the Director of Compensation and Benefits; the Director of Employment and Employee Relations; the Director of the HR Service Center; and the Director of Staff and Organizational Development. The College is planning on an additional hire to build capacity in labor relations. (A total of 150 clerical, technical and professional employees recently voted to form a union with SEIU; Emerson full-time tenure track, affiliated, and Los Angeles-based faculty are represented by AAUP and the Emerson police officers and dispatchers are represented by ACOPS.)
The AVP-HR will be partner with the VP for Administration and Finance and members of the senior leadership team in developing long and short-term strategies and services that meet the workforce and business needs of the College, positioning Emerson as an employer of choice. The AVP-HR provides guidance to help drive business strategy and value; builds organizational strategic alignment to support execution of institutional goals; ensures that there is a solid HR structure in place to deliver value-added core and advisory services; continually keeps a pulse on workforce trends and business environment changes; and focuses on shared responsibility for managing talent, managing culture, and building capability.

Required Knowledge:
•Bachelor’s degree; master’s and SPHR/PHR preferred
•Ten years’ experience in HR with increasing levels of responsibility and management, including serving in a senior leadership role
•Experience in higher education or complex not-for-profit or ability to quickly grasp and adapt to culture
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, collaborative approach
•Excellent analytical ability, including budget management and allocation
•Record of developing best-in-class HR strategies
•Labor relations experience with strong mediation and negotiation capabilities
•Experience with systems implementation and an understanding of how technology can enhance HR service delivery
•Commitment to developing and nurturing a diverse and inclusive workforce and evidence of effectiveness working within a diverse organizational context
•Dynamic and engaging leadership style with ability to relate to colleagues at all levels of organization
