Community Outreach Coordinator, Scott Arboretum

Swarthmore College is a highly selective liberal arts college located in the suburbs of Philadelphia, whose mission combines academic rigor with social responsibility. Swarthmore's 425acre campus is a designated arboretum, complete with gardens, rolling lawns, a creek, wooded hills, and hiking trails in the Crum Woods adjacent to the campus.

The Community Outreach Coordinator is responsible for enhancing the engagement of the Swarthmore College community and the broader community in activities of the Scott Arboretum. The Coordinator plans, offers, evaluates new programs in response to student, staff, and faculty interests and needs as they relate to horticulture and the Scott Arboretum. The programs and activities will evolve as faculty change and needs and interests of the campus community change. Perform other duties as assigned.

This position, created in 2017 in response to the Scott Arboretum's strategic planning process completed in 2015, is a pilot program to address the College administration's stated desire for the Arboretum to be more fully integrated with the core of the College. Initial funding is secured for three years, 2017-2020.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in horticulture, education, or related field
  • Experience with other public gardens or educational organizations
  • Must be proficient in typing and computer skills, particularly with word processing, email, desktop publishing and Web page experience
  • Must have supervisory, time management, organizational, and public speaking skills
  • Must have an understanding and familiarity with audio-visual equipment
  • Must be able to conduct tours and other events
  • Must be able to travel locally; have a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to lift objects weighing 20-50 pounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree desirable in horticulture, education, or related field
  • Knowledge of current horticultural trends through travel, reading, and exploration
  • Knowledge of ornamental horticulture
