Position Description: Full-time assistant professor of economics on annual international assignment for the Fort Hays State University (FHSU) W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship (http://www.fhsu.edu/), stationed at Shenyang Normal University (http://www.synu.edu.cn/synuen/p1.html) in Liaoning Province, China, with opportunity for annual renewal.

Full Time Assistant Professor of Economics

Overview:  About 15 years ago, FHSU and SNU became one of the first sets of universities approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education to offer dual Western/Chinese degrees in China.  Currently, the institutions offer several dual bachelor degree options.  The faculty member in this position will teach in the FHSU Bachelor of Business Administration degree program at SNU.  At SNU, FHSU offers its BBA degree in International Business and Economics.  All instruction, course deliverables, and other work is conducted in English, so familiarity with the Chinese language is not required.  Normal annual faculty evaluation is based on teaching (60%), research (20%), and service (20%).

This position entails a 4/4 teaching load.  Throughout the 2017-18 academic year, this faculty member will likely teach two on-campus sections each of FIN 405 (Intermediate Finance), FIN 641 (Financial Markets and Institutions), and FIN 645 (International Finance), and two online sections of one of the foregoing courses.

The successful candidate will exhibit a scholarly interest and a commitment to remain active in a scholarly manner throughout his or her career. Specific scholarship requirements will align with the pursuit of AACSB accreditation in the Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship. The Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting recognizes scholarship of discovery, integration, application, and pedagogy. Joint publications are accepted and encouraged.  Service to the University, College, department, the region, and/or profession is expected as well.

FHSU provides round-trip transportation (and additional reasonable expenses) for travel to and from China, as well as to FHSU for training.  All instruction is supported with the Blackboard learning management system.  Instructional workloads average 4 class sections each semester.  Additional instructional responsibilities may be added to ensure workloads of four courses per semester for all faculty members. Applicants must demonstrate an ability to communicate and interact well with students from other cultures, FHSU faculty members, FHSU administrators, and the administrators at Shenyang Normal University.  Each faculty member is supported by two graduate teaching assistants.  These auxiliary instructors will lead recitation sessions and discussions, assist with grading, supervise examinations, assist with academic research, and perform other work as directed by the faculty member.

Requirements: The successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen or be eligible for U.S. employment. Additionally, the successful candidate must be able to work legally in China by obtaining a work permit in the Liaoning Province of China.  Each FHSU BBA faculty position at SNU is an annual assignment as a visiting professor, subject to annual review with possibility of continuation. Salaries and benefits are competitive for qualified applicants.  SNU-based FHSU BBA faculty members report to the FHSU Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship’s International Coordinator.

In September 2016, the FHSU Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship filed for candidacy for AACSB accreditation.  It is therefore necessary that the faculty member in this position meet the current AACSB standards for a scholarly academic (SA) business faculty member.  For this position, this requires a doctoral degree in economics and a strong background in finance (e.g., 18 or more graduate credit hours in finance and/or scholarly publications with strong financial elements), and either (a) two or more published or accepted peer reviewed articles in scholarly journals over the last five-year period, or (b) that the candidate’s doctoral degree has been conferred within the last five-year period, plus evidence of an active scholarly agenda.  Exceptional ABD candidates may be considered as well, but must complete their dissertation work within one year of employment at FHSU, and must have demonstrated research potential.  Any offer to an ABD candidate will be contingent upon documentation from the candidate’s dissertation chair that the candidate is within one academic year of completion.  In addition to holding SA status upon his or her hire, the successful candidate must thereafter maintain SA status through currency in research.

Priority will be given to candidates with strong teaching, communication, and cross-cultural skills.  Experience with online instructional delivery and course design (Blackboard) is also preferred.  Prior experience working abroad will be favorably weighed.  Finalists will consent to and successfully complete a criminal background check.
