The Theatre Program in the Speech, Communications and Theatre Arts Department at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Costume Design & Technology position starting Fall 2017.

The Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) is an integral part of City University of New York system with the largest college enrollment in the system of over 25,000 students. It is strategically located in downtown Manhattan in close proximity to the artistic communities of Tribeca and SoHo, the dynamic downtown financial district, and the center of New York City government at City Hall.

Theatre Program faculty teach technical classes with design components such as Elements of Production and Production Practicums (including, but not limited to, Basic Costume Construction), as well as Introduction to Theatre. Faculty are expected to participate fully in the operations of a growing and collaborative department including design, construction and technical supervision of productions in their area(s) of expertise; budget operations; organization and maintenance of shared work spaces, inventory and equipment. Evening and /or weekend schedule required. They will share responsibility for curriculum development, participation in departmental and college-wide activities and committees, such as grant writing, assessment, faculty development, mentoring student projects, academic advisement and other functions for the good of the institution. Research, publication, or outside creative work are expected for tenure and promotion.


For Assistant, Associate or Full Professor:

Ph.D or MFA; or equivalent, in theatre, theatre design or related field. Main area of teaching will be costume design & technology and general stagecraft. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have significant professional experience in costume design, technology or costume shop management. Experience with teaching and learning technologies preferred.

For Associate or Full Professor, candidate must have a record of significant achievement in the field. Three years college teaching experience preferred.

Applicants with experience in all areas of costume technology and design, as well as a broad general knowledge of theatre stagecraft, are encouraged to apply. Our ideal candidate is professionally active in the theatre, will maintain industry-standard levels of safety and organization in our spaces, and possesses the ability to adhere to production budgets and timelines while leading student production teams. Effective communication and collaboration with students, faculty designers and directors is a must.

City University of New York and BMCC expect faculty to have a real passion for teaching and engage in scholarship and research in their fields. Ideal candidates for the faculty positions would have an established research agenda and be able to take advantage of the bountiful academic resources and institutions available within the metropolitan New York area and research opportunities within the City University of New York. Significant research release time is available to junior faculty, and peer-refereed publications are a necessary component for tenure and promotion.

Candidates shortlisted for interviews may be expected to present a brief portfolio presentation for theatre faculty and/or conduct a brief teaching presentation.
