Job Description Summary:

The Office of the Associate Vice President (OVPR) for Research Integrity and Compliance is seeking a Director, Office of Human Research (OHR). Office of Human Research supports The George Washington University research community in the conduct of innovative and ethical research by providing guidance, education, and oversight for the protection of human subjects. The Director, OHR reports directly to the Associate Vice President and is responsible for managing all business of the Office of Human Research. Specific responsibilities include:

Acts as the primary liaison with federal and state agencies on human research issues; consults with proponent agency staff as necessary regarding the interpretation and implementation of guidelines. Interprets and applies federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and procedures related to human subjects research. Implements and oversees necessary standards to attain full AAHRPP accreditation

Provides oversight for the ongoing work and growth of the Institutional Review Board/Committee on Human Research (IRB), including administrative operations, providing orientation and continuing education to IRB members, and implementation of policies and procedures of the Institution's two Boards. Oversees IRB documents of record to ensure appropriate documentation and maintenance of IRB actions and correspondence related to IRB submissions, approvals and termination of IRB activities. Serves as steward of GW's Federal Wide Assurance. Prepares and submits regular narrative reports related to IRB and human subject research activities to GW leadership.

Monitors IRB activities and programs; prepares an annual operating budget, maintains institutional assurances, registration, and approvals needed for human research. Oversees triage of all protocols received for review by the IRB, and assigns individual protocols to OHR staff for additional regulatory compliance review. Works with the Executive Director for Research Integrity on all compliance matters.

Advises clinical, social and behavior science investigators, senior administrators and students on federal regulations and Institutional policies/procedures, to ensure institutional compliance with the ethical and regulatory requirements for human subjects research, and understands the impact of any proposed regulatory changes on institutional policies pertaining to human subjects research. Consults with, Associate Vice President for Research Integrity and Compliance, Executive Director for Research Integrity, GW Office of General Counsel, department chairs and principal investigators regarding how guidelines should be implemented. Develops and presents educational programs and workshops for IRB members, faculty and staff on the protection of human research subjects.

Recruits, supervises and evaluates the performance of several employees. Ensures that OHR staff provide consistent, helpful and professional advice, and conduct assessments in a timely fashion. Assures that OHR staff are trained and knowledgeable of, and follow, OHRE Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and that the staff's knowledge/skills are properly enhanced through in-service and/or external training. Interacts with staff to develop and implement new OHRE policies/procedures.

Develops and presents educational programs and workshops for IRB members, faculty and staff on the protection of human research subjects.

Performs special project assignments required to support human subject research compliance.
Works with OVPR leadership to choose and implement an online system for IRB protocol submission and review. .

Monitors publications, reports and related information on new/revised regulations on human subject protections and maintains professional knowledge/skills by attending seminars, workshops and the review of published literature. Provides input into the IRB web page as well as education and training materials.
Performs other related duties as assigned, including serving as a Data Steward. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

5 years professional experience involving the administration and compliance of human subjects research activities.

Management experience is highly desirable.
