STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Director of Systems and Infrastructure Operations, the Virtualization and Storage Infrastructure Engineer works with other IT staff to help manage and support the University's central IT VMware and SAN storage infrastructure. He or she works closely with network engineers, application developers, and database administrators to ensure optimal performance of the underlying virtual server platform, operating systems, local and SAN-based storage, and application load balancer configurations. Operates and monitors data storage devices including disk arrays, tape libraries, and SAN hardware and software infrastructure as they pertain to systems operation and server virtualization. Analyzes performance, stability, and security measures of server operating system and IT-managed applications and makes recommendations for hardware and software upgrades. Performs related duties as assigned, necessary, or requested by management.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides primary administrative support for IT's VMware vSphere 6.x server virtualization infrastructure, including HP blade hardware installation, vCenter configuration, and SAN storage allocation according to established University IT standards and practices.
Assists IT staff with Storage Area Network administration, including volume creation and presentation, performance monitoring, and data snapshot and cloning operations.
Adheres to standards and procedures for disaster recovery documentation. Maintains a library of recovery support and business resumption procedures.
Assists in installation and administration of server virtualization platforms for resiliency of services for disaster recovery and business continuity.
Performs and/or assists the technical support staff in the installation and configuration of computing systems, storage and network devices to insure that baseline security measures are in place, and appropriate operation and functionality is maintained.
Coordinates with server and applications administrators to develop and test effective backup and data retention policies and procedures for all Linux and Windows-based servers and application data repositories.
Works with project teams and IT staff to ensure stability, functionality, and integrity of all ERP administrative applications such as Banner Student Information, Peoplesoft Finance, and Workday Human Resources (SaaS).
Establishes and maintains effective communication and cooperative working relationships with the Institutions administrators, faculty and staff, government and private agencies, in order to accomplish the objectives of the Information Technology Division.
Compiles and analyzes systems and network data as required to assist in capacity planning so campus computing and networking resources can be utilized to their full potential.
Maintains system and network logs as necessary to identify potential security threats or attacks/probes on IT systems.
Attends and participates in meetings, ad hoc or standing committees, or University events related to assigned responsibilities, and represents the University at off-campus conferences, seminars or meetings as required.
Performs other functions consistent with the job title as necessary and as directed by the Director of Systems and Infrastructure Operations.
Qualifications & Requirements
Graduation from an accredited university/college with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related field. Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute the indicated experience on year for year basis (30 credit hours is considered one year of college.)
Five years of professional experience in systems administration, integration, and computing support, preferably in an institution of higher education or other field that is directly related to the functions of the position. At least two years of extensive hands-on experience with VMware vSphere (6.x a plus) and VMware vCenter Server v6 including, but not limited to: installation and upgrades, configuration, management, capacity planning and performance analysis of both ESXi and vCenter Server. Must have prior experience administering Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems in a mission-critical production environment. HP SAN experience in a mixed-OS production environment is also a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of VMware best practices and industry standards related to server virtualization. This includes CPU and memory allocation best practices in a virtualized environment to ensure efficient operation of the host applications without over-taxing the underlying hardware resources.
Experience with C7000 series HP blade chassis using various interconnect components and multiple generations of HP blades, including chassis mid-plane architecture and Virtual Connect software.
Familiarity with HP virtual storage arrays, SAN management appliances (Command View) and SAN fabrics (Brocade switches).
Knowledge of other storage arrays (EMC, Nimble Storage, Pure Storage, NetApp, etc) is a plus.
Experience creating and managing zones on fiber channel switches (according to industry best practices) via GUI and/or command line.
Experience with backups and restores in a virtual environment, including familiarity with cloud services and IaaS, disaster recovery and business continuity.
Experience with an enterprise-class backup and recovery solutions such as Dell NetVault, Unitrends Enterprise Backup or Veeam.
Knowledge of operating systems including: Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows Server 2008/2012.
Knowledge of common vulnerabilities in Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems, and how to minimize those vulnerabilities through proper security configuration and/or additional software.
Ability to maintain a Best Practices approach to system installation, maintenance, and security posture in a production environment.
Ability to acquire considerable knowledge of the higher education system and the function of institutions of higher learning.
Familiarity with major ERP products such as Peoplesoft Finance, Workday HRS, and Ellucian Banner Student is a plus.
