Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Department of Nuclear Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nuclear Engineering. The Department is the only nuclear engineering program in the State of North Carolina and one of the premier departments in the southeast United States. There are nearly 100 Graduate students and 137 Undergraduates (sophomore to senior classes) majoring in Nuclear Engineering. The Carolinas currently contribute to the advancement of the nuclear enterprise regionally, nationally and internationally. Today, NC State is the lead university in the unique Department of Energy-funded CASL initiative, which uses advanced computer simulations to create safer, more cost-effective nuclear power plants. Through collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, NC State's Nuclear Engineering Department is increasing its footprint on the national and global level. With an increasing faculty population and research areas/projects, there is greater opportunity for learning in the broad areas of fission reactor engineering, radiation applications, nuclear materials, computational science, and plasma science and engineering. Essential Job Duties: The primary purpose of the position of Business Officer is to provide leadership and oversight over the diverse business aspects of Departmental operations, including finance, personnel actions, sponsored research, student services and office management and coordinating the activities of several programs that function under the Department. The position is the administrative liaison of the unit with other campus units and external clients. The Business Officer will provide effective day-to-day management and administration, ensuring the Department's compliance with University, State of North Carolina Rules and Regulations, policies, and procedures as well as deadlines set by internal and external entities including the University and the College of Engineering. The responsibilities of this position requires specialization and knowledge in different software programs in all areas of administration and business components.
Department Required Skills: * Demonstrated experience with analyzing information, problems, situations, practices or procedures to define problems, identify solutions and independently act on the resolution. * Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word (or similar software). * Must be able to work autonomously and efficiently. * Exceptional customer service skills. * Excellent written and oral communication skills. * Ability to apply organizational theories to solve various business issues. * Ability to Identify and avoid potential problems using quantitative techniques. * Experience with cross-functional team work. * Ability to use sound judgment in decision making and implementation. * Ability to identify and assimilate the critical elements of a situation. * Must be able to multi-task and set priorities to meet deadlines.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * At least 1-3 years of progressive program/business management experience, preferably in a higher education setting. * Proven leadership ability, experience with hiring process, training, and mentoring team members. * Demonstrate management skills such as leadership, planning and organization. * Considerable knowledge of University software systems - WRS, Peoplesoft, PeopleAdmin, SIS, SAR, etc. * Supervisory experience.
