Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, the Executive Director of the Career Center provides innovative and strategic leadership, program development, and administration of a comprehensive career center serving all undergraduate and graduate students (with the exception of graduate students enrolled in the Schools of Business, Law, and Medicine). The Executive Director will work closely with other areas under the Assistant Vice President’s purview (the Student Success Collaborative) which includes the Center for University Advising, Student Access Services, International Student Affairs, and the Center for Academic Excellence. The Executive Director will be a integral member of the Division of Student Affairs leadership team that is committed to supporting student success and actively advancing innovative and best practices with regards to increasing student engagement, enhancing career preparation, assessing learning outcomes, and cultivating among students the self-confidence, competencies, and connections with others that will lead to personally and professionally satisfying futures upon graduation.
The Executive Director will lead a team of nine full-time staff members engaged in career counseling/coaching, educational programming, employer outreach, and substantive liaison partnerships with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Honors College, and Schools of Business, Communication, Education, Engineering & Applied Sciences, and Health Sciences & Human Services. Facilitating continuous improvement and leading change to ensure the Center remains responsive to student career development needs and evolving market trends; collaborating with campus partners—including faculty, student affairs, alumni relations, development, institutional research & assessment, and parent & family programs; implementing effective data collection, analysis, and reporting systems; increasing quality internship opportunities and employment outcomes; and enhancing the Career Center brand, visibility, and value to internal and external constituents are key responsibilities of the Executive Director. The Executive Director will develop and monitor the department’s long-range strategic plan, provide supervision and development of staff, manage a growing operational budget, and serve as a champion, advocate, role model, and mentor for Hofstra students.
A master’s degree is required. A record of at least 7 years of progressively responsible experience focused on promoting career development and facilitating relationships to support and sustain the professional preparation and success of others—preferably within a higher education institution—is required. The successful candidate must: be forward-looking (embracing best practices and creating next practices), equipped to identify and implement solutions to address evolving employment and educational trends impacting employers, students, and alumni; possess strategic change management skills coupled with strong fiscal planning and budget management abilities; demonstrate leadership and supervisory capabilities; thrive in a learning environment that welcomes and celebrates human diversity and difference; and bring a goal-oriented, data-driven approach to generating measurable outcomes. Collaboration with internal and external constituents; utilization and competence of current technologies and social media; commitment to customer service; strong communication, marketing, and public relations skills; and ability to multi-task will also be important considerations in the selection of the Executive Director.
