Provost and Dean of the College
Birmingham-Southern College, a four-year, private residential liberal arts college in one of the Sunbelt’s culturally rich and economically vibrant cities, announces the national search for Provost and Dean of the College (Provost). As the chief academic officer, the Provost has responsibility for all elements of BSC’s academic program, including faculty and academic departments, the Harrison Honors Program, international studies, sponsored programs, and the Krulak Institute for Leadership, Experiential Learning, and Civic Engagement (http://www.bsc.edu/academics/krulak/index.cfm). In an academic environment known for instructive mentoring, civic engagement, and high student achievement, enrollment is 1300, and more than 95 percent of faculty members have terminal degrees. The successful candidate will succeed Dr. Michelle Behr, who has accepted the chancellorship of The University of Minnesota-Morris. The College seeks a senior-level academic administrator with a well-rounded and diverse record of achievement in higher education, a strong student-centered focus, an engaging, collegial personal style, and the ability to inspire change and lead with confidence. A seasoned understanding of education issues, a big-picture approach to opportunities, and a management philosophy based on consensus-building are important, as is the ability to synthesize large amounts of data to make informed decisions about programmatic direction. The Provost will lead the faculty in identifying other new programs that blend the requirements of a technologically-driven society with the critical thinking trademark of a liberal arts education.
Second in command on the campus, the Provost works closely with the President and senior administrators on wide-ranging efforts to advance an institution that is home to outstanding teachers and scholars and offers unique 21st century programs and outcomes-based curricula. In addition to setting the academic vision and direction of the College, the Provost is an ambassador for its academic programs, works with the senior leadership team to grow enrollment and increase student retention, and assists the Office of Institutional Advancement in cultivating donors and other forms of external funding.
