General Description of Position:

The University of South Dakota invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.   The Dean will be a key member of a University leadership team that emphasizes multidisciplinary strategic initiatives, diversity and inclusiveness, entrepreneurial thinking, clear communication and direction, and bold vision.  The College of Arts & Sciences plays an integral role in the pursuit of these goals.

Information about the College of Arts and Sciences:

The College of Arts & Sciences has 24 academic programs housed in 16 academic departments with 181 faculty offering 28 different undergraduate majors, 17 masters, and eight doctoral degrees in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The annual budget of the college is $21.9 million (FY17,) and it generates $3.3 million (FY17) in research expenditures. Arts & Sciences is the largest college on campus with more than 22,000 alumni. Graduates are famous journalists, Hollywood screen writers, novelists, a Nobel Prize winner, South Dakota governors, attorneys, physicians, justices of the state Supreme Court, distinguished university faculty and international humanitarians.  The next dean will have the ability to work with students, faculty and staff across a wide range of disciplines.  Additional information about the College of Arts & Sciences can be found at

Diversity and Inclusive Excellence:

The Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College.  The Dean is responsible for providing overall program leadership, strategic vision and direction, fiscal stewardship, fund development, and support for the College.  Specific responsibilities of the Dean include:

  • Providing leadership for all of the undergraduate and graduate academic degree programs in the college;
  • Promoting quality undergraduate and graduate experiences for both on-campus and on-line students;
  • Building continued excellence and growth in research programs;
  • Supporting effective academic advising;
  • Being actively involved in the recruitment and retention of high caliber, diverse students, faculty, and staff in the college as well as promoting a welcoming and inclusive environment;
  • Working effectively with faculty, staff, department heads, deans, university administrators, students, and the broader community on interdisciplinary and collaborative projects;
  • Providing leadership with a high degree of personal involvement with the fundraising efforts on behalf of the college;
  • Maintaining and strengthening strategic relationships with the community, alumni, benefactors, and partners in the public and private sector on behalf of the College and University;
  • Providing budget and fiscal responsibilities.

The Dean of the College reports directly to the Provost and serves on the Academic Council of Deans.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified applicants must have an earned Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited institution in a field or specialty that is offered by the USD College of Arts & Sciences and must hold appointment with tenure at the level of full professor.  The successful candidate must show evidence of dynamic leadership experience, strategic vision with the ability to execute, strong financial management and decision-making skills, a commitment to teaching and research, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.  In addition, the successful candidate must have a proven record as a successful administrator with responsibility for guiding strategy, managing budgets, evaluating personnel, motivating faculty, promoting accountability, engaging external constituencies, and fostering diversity and teamwork to create collaborative relationships across culturally diverse groups. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated success in acquiring and aligning resources to achieve strategic goals; success in alumni relations, fund development, and external fundraising; experience implementing successful interdisciplinary programs that enhance the standing of an institution; and a record of promoting diversity, inclusion, and a global perspective among students, faculty, staff, and in the curriculum.  The successful candidate will be a dynamic individual whose intellect and disposition are suited to a wide range of academic and professional missions within the College and who is committed to an open and participatory administrative style.

Candidates with a strong academic record may also qualify for an appointment to the endowed Lohre Distinguished Professorship at USD.
