Smith College is accepting applications for a part-time Interim Associate Director of Field Work.  Reporting the Director of Field Work, the Interim Associate Director provides leadership and assists with major aspects of the work of the field department which designs and implements internship-based training for approximately 250 MSW level students in over 120 agencies throughout the United States.  This is a part-time, non-benefited position, 17 hours per week for approximately six months.


Agency Administration: Develop agency affiliations, including tracking applications for affiliation, agency site visits and the preparation of agency agreements for all affiliated training sites.

Placement and Internship Management: Compile accurate information about available internship sites prior to the field placement process; serve on the field placement committee which assigns students to field internships; review all field placement letters and materials; read and monitor all student evaluations of the field.  Facilitate consultation sessions of the Academic and Field Work Performance Standing Committee and present, when appropriate, to the full AFWPS Committee; serve, under some circumstances, as a voting member of the AFWPS Committee. Consult with students and supervisors about agency-based learning issues or concerns.

Other: Serve on SSW Field committees as assigned, including the Field Education and Consultation and Review Task Forces. Serve as Chair designate for Interim Director of Field as needed.

Field Advisor Management: Work with the Interim Director of Field Work, to hire, train, supervise and consult with the Faculty Field Advisors.


Education/Experience: MSW degree and a minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience in field education, preferably either as an agency-based supervisor or as a Faculty Field Advisor. 

Skills: Ability to organize and prioritize work, take initiative, resolve problems, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Excellent communication skills, including listening, verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to be discreet and maintain confidentiality; strong project management skills; ability to communicate with all levels of the department and organization;  ability to interact well with diverse constituencies and the ability to support and contribute to the School’s antiracism initiatives.  Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and basic computer skills required. Previous experience working with diverse populations and with the development of on-line or other distance learning forums would be helpful.
