Study Abroad Advisor (SEARCH EXTENDED)
Global Initiatives: Study Abroad Advisor (SEARCH EXTENDED) to supports education abroad (Miami in Luxembourg - MUDEC, study abroad and away, global academic service learning and international internships) by advising students on various opportunities and options; serving as the primary advisor for MUDEC; supporting the MUDEC Coordinator in recruitment, application management, and outreach/promotion; working with students and faculty to assure compliance with university policies; identifying appropriate opportunities for professional development; preparing students for an immersive experience; developing and offering opportunities for returning students for reflection and application of experience; advocating on campus for education abroad; and supporting the mission of Global Initiatives.
Study abroad advising:
Inform and advise students on a group and individual basis about Miami in Luxembourg, study abroad, international internship, academic service learning, and exchange program opportunities available to them; support student understanding of how to make an educated study abroad decision; tailor study abroad information to students’ individual interests, goals and needs; communicate this information to students in person, over the phone and via email.
Promote study abroad via class presentations, information sessions, New Student Orientation presentations, Family Weekend presentations, study abroad fair and other presentations as planned throughout the year.
Provide comprehensive support to students and parents throughout the study abroad process from application to re-entry. Ensure an understanding of and compliance with all policies and procedures (academic credit approval, risk management, financial aid).
Monitor student applications to study abroad via Studio Abroad and ensure that students have completed required documents and procedures for other offices, including the Office of Student Financial Assistance and the Office of the Registrar.
Advise and assist students on general student visa issues, as needed.
In collaboration with the Study Abroad team, provide assistance and coordination in the following areas:
Diversity and inclusion: Collaborate with the Office of Diversity Affairs to provide study abroad support, advising, and programming for traditionally underrepresented students.
Marketing and promotion: Strategically determine means and methods of marketing study abroad programs to recruit eligible students.
Regional campus outreach: Lead study abroad advising, marketing, and promotional efforts for Miami University’s regional campuses.
Curriculum integration: Align study abroad options with Miami University curriculum by meeting with academic departments and identifying course equivalencies.
Ambassador volunteer program: Provide direct and functional supervision to the Ambassador volunteer program for returned study abroad students, and student employees.
Study abroad support: Support relevant study abroad initiatives as needed.
Required qualifications: Master’s degree in relevant field of study; previous experience in advising; prior experience living, studying, or working abroad; ability to manage complex and multiple tasks with minimal supervision; verifiable excellent attendance history; superior time management, organization, and communication skills; ability to work with diverse populations of learners and associates.
Desire: Foreign language proficiency; two years of experience in study abroad advising; familiarity with Banner and Studio Abroad.
