Position Summary

The Department of Health Professions at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applicants to apply for a full time tenure track position for the 2017-2018 academic year. The candidate will be an integral member of the Recreation Professions faculty as well as the Department of Health Professions and will be required to follow those responsibilities outlined in the MSU Denver Handbook for Professional Personnel.
This tenure-track position has two roles: Program Coordinator of the Recreation Professions program, and Assistant Professor – Therapeutic Recreation (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). The Recreation Program offers three undergraduate concentrations: Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation Management, and Recreation Generalist. The candidate will advise a diverse population of students, manage affiliate faculty, and teach courses related to recreation and park services. The position is a 10-month, tenure-track appointment and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties will include undergraduate teaching, advising, research, and professional and administrative service. Successful candidates must have the ability to teach a variety of core recreation courses and will be required to teach therapeutic recreation courses.
Primary responsibilities include the following:
• Candidates are expected to teach twelve credit hours per semester with summer teaching opportunities possible
• The successful candidate should have demonstrated teaching experience and expertise that will enable contributions in teaching a variety of undergraduate Recreation core curriculum courses
• Maintain and foster partnerships with professional organizations and provide service to the university and community
• Assists in recruiting, training, and supervising affiliate faculty in areas of recreation theory, leadership, management, and therapeutic practices
• Assists with the collection, analysis, and reporting of the program’s Student Learning Outcomes
• Advises students on academic progression, program and graduation requirements, and other relevant issues

Required Qualifications

Minimum qualification of ABD in Recreation Management, Recreation Programming, Recreation Administration or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification as a CTRS through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification
• Experience working in a Therapeutic Recreation context
• Ability to teach courses in Therapeutic Recreation and core curriculum related to recreation, parks, and leisure studies
• A minimum of one year of college/university teaching experience
• Experience with the delivery of academic courses through traditional and online platforms
• Experience advising students and supervising interns
• Ability to integrate technology into teaching (e.g., Blackboard, PowerPoint/Prezi, etc.)
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research resulting in scholarly publications and presentations
• Demonstrated ability to serve to the profession, university, and community
• Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Certifications and other professional development activities relevant to area of expertise (e.g., Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP)
The successful candidate must have the ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population.
