The University of Colorado Boulder Facilities Management (FM) department welcomes applicants for a Sustainability Program Manager. The sustainability program manager will serve to develop, manage and coordinate a department-wide program of environmental stewardship, resource conservation, applied environmental science and policy research, and environmental literacy and community outreach. The program manager will represent the Department of Facilities Management at applicable meetings with University and community leadership. He/she will represent FM in the development of campus sustainability goals and priorities to ensure alignment with campus strategic priorities. The manager reports to the assistant vice chancellor of Planning, Design and Construction Services and each of the FM Division directors (Operations, Business Services, Utility Services, and Human Resources) on their programs.

We are looking for someone with strong problem solving and interpersonal skills, who possesses a thorough understanding of sustainability theories and initiatives and is able to develop and execute new programs within an institutional setting. The position must be able to work with constituents at different levels both on and off campus.

Who we are:

Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for the overall physical development and maintenance of the campus. The mission of the department is to provide a safe physical environment that promotes the advancement and transfer of knowledge.

What your key responsibilities will be:

As the Sustainability Program Manager, you will be responsible for:

  • Sustainability Policy (25%): Represent FM in the effort to re-examine CU Boulder sustainability goals and policy with the intent to ratify and/or redefine outdated commitments. Define, benchmark, and track progress of stated goals for FM. Collaborate in developing a strategy to integrate sustainability principles and practices into the operations and culture of the FM department. Research and maintain working knowledge of best practices with regards to sustainability and educational institutions. Work toward the CU Boulder goal of becoming a leader in environmental excellence among higher education institutions.
  • Outreach (25%): Identify opportunities to promote and improve the CU-Boulder FM's sustainability efforts and provide recommendations to department and campus decision makers. Create and implement a department-wide sustainability policy and action plan for CU-Boulder FM. Assess effectiveness of approved plan. Work with FM staff, CU Boulder students and professors, and campus leadership team to build support and understanding of sustainability projects and issues. Engage with campus leadership to foster sustainability broadly across other campus units and departments. Serve as the FM department spokesperson on sustainability issues.
  • Implementation (25%): Provide coordination and oversight of sustainability consultants for campus green building initiatives and certification. Serve as campus coordinator for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification of new and existing buildings. Administer the LEED Online website on behalf of CU. Complete reporting requirements for campus commitments. Manage the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) certification process. Encourage and facilitate sustainability programs initiated by staff, and involve students, professors and community members by encouraging suggestions, sharing information, and coordinating communication. Program initiatives spanning multiple department programs including but not limited to: energy, chemicals, resources, systems and education.
  • Planning (25%): Represent the Department of Facilities Management during campus-wide sustainability planning processes and working groups. Annually review, update, and maintain MOU agreement with CUSG and the CU Environmental Center as it pertains to the campus Recycling Program. Development responsibility for grant funding, corporate partnerships, and other potential funding sources. Provide strategic direction for development of departmental and campus initiatives and programs to reduce waste, save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase environmental awareness within the department. Coordinate development and maintenance of sustainability metrics for the FM department such as energy and natural resource usage, waste generation and recycling statistics.

What we can offer:

Annual Salary Range: $75,000-$85,000, commensurate with skills and experience.

What we require:


  • Bachelor's degree or higher in energy management, environmental science, policy, engineering, sustainable development, institutional planning or related field.
  • Five years of experience implementing sustainability or environmental/resource conservation programs in a related field such as planning, environmental or resource management, or facilities management, with relevant leadership expertise.

Substitution: Additional experience in energy management, environmental science, policy, engineering, sustainable development, or institutional planning may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the bachelor's degree.



  • Understanding of sustainability theories as well as local, national and global sustainability initiatives and best practices.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute new sustainability programs within an institutional setting.
  • Expertise in working with local and state governments including utilities.
  • Understanding of how to institutionalize new sustainability efforts.
  • Practiced at public speaking and curriculum development.

What we'd like you to have:



  • Master's degree in energy management, environmental science, policy, or engineering, sustainable development, institutional planning or related field
  • Relevant experience in corporate, university, government, or non-profit setting will be given strong consideration.

Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are most highly qualified.
