Staff Assistant-Writer/Media Relations Specialist
Department Summary: The Division of Marketing and Communications is responsible for telling the Bridgewater State University story to the institution's major audiences, including current and prospective students, faculty and staff, alumni and donors, media, regional business, non-profit and governmental institutions and leaders, and the general public. The division manages all facets of the university's communications and major communications channels, including branding, marketing, advertising, publications, the university website, media relations, major social media channels and video production. Bridgewater is a thriving university, which has undergone extraordinary growth in enrollments and programs in the past two decades. The Division of Marketing and Communications is growing and seeking staff who are creative and driven to help tell the BSU success story.
Position Summary: The Staff Assistant, Writer/Media Relations Specialist, works closely with the Directors of News & Digital and Integrated Marketing & Media to provide content for the university's website, social media sites and university publications (hereafter "BSU platforms") and to conduct media relations. Content includes interviewing and writing story briefs; profiles of faculty, students and staff; full-length feature stories; and copy for a webpages. In addition, the Writer/Media Relations Specialist will also be responsible for pitching stories to local, state and national media, drafting press releases/media advisories and writing bylined and op-ed articles. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The Staff Assistant, Writer/Media Relations Specialist, reports to the Director of News & Digital and the Director of Integrated Media and Marketing. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: The Staff Assistant, Writer/Media Relations Specialist may supervise subordinate professional, clerical and student employees assigned to the Office of News & Digital and the Office of Integrated Media and Marketing. This is an exempt, APA unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.
Essential Duties: 1. Work with faculty and administrators to generate story and profile ideas for BSU platforms and external media. 2. Interview and write feature stories and briefs, including profiles, for use on all BSU platforms. 3. Develop story pitches, build relationships with reporters and editors and pitch stories to local, state and national media. 4. Write marketing content for print and web publications and the BSU website working with members of the Division of Marketing and Communications 5. Cover university events as assigned. 6. Work with Office of Video and TV Studio to develop video content to accompany stories. 7. Take and edit photos to accompany stories, as well as to provide images for use on all BSU platforms. 8. Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree. * One to three year's of experience working in public relations or media relations. * Strong writing ability, producing copy on tight deadlines * Strong media relations skills * Ability to locate sources and other necessary material to produce well-rounded and compelling copy * Ability to build relationships with colleagues at various levels across the university including the president, senior leaders, faculty, staff and students. * Solid organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications: * Experience in higher education * Basic photography and photographic editing skills

Salary Range: $50,000-$55,000
