Primary Function of Organization Unit: The College of Sciences (COS) is home to six departments: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Biological Sciences, and Marine Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. In addition there are several Centers focused on research and graduate student training (Center for Marine Sciences and Technology, Center for High Performance Simulation, Bioinformatics Research Center, Center for Research in Scientific Computation, Center for Quantitative Sciences in Biomedicine), as well as strong outreach efforts such as the Science House and strong partnership with the State Museum of Natural Sciences. The State Climate Office of North Carolina is also part of the college. The faculty, staff and students of the College of Sciences are committed to excellence in research, teaching and teaming, and public service. Our focus on multi-disciplinary collaboration builds a foundation of experience that well prepares students for the real world. Our undergraduates work alongside faculty and graduate students on research teams exploring some of today's most exciting scientific challenges. The College Human Resources Office is responsible for delivering the full complement of personnel services for more than 418 EPA employees, 118 SPA employees, 85 postdoctoral positions, and 629 graduate students on assistantships.
Essential Job Duties: This position provides administrative support to the Assistant Dean of Culture, Talent and Human Resources, as well as COS Human Resources. The College of Sciences is the third largest college on campus, thus resulting in the COS HR office being a high volume and fast paced office. The incumbent must be comfortable with an ever changing environment and be willing to change priorities as needed. This position is also expected to maintain knowledge about HR policies and programs to respond to inquiries from within the college, complete I-9's, respond to requests for unemployment claim information and provide support to the HR Specialists. This position will also compile ad hoc HR reports as needed utilizing personnel data and will develop content for and update the COS HR website and departmental standard operating procedures. The incumbent must exercise good judgment and discretion, particularly in matters relative to sensitive or confidential records, personnel or organizational matters. Professionalism, excellent customer service, and team work are required.
Department Required Skills: *Excellent communication skills, oral and written. *Strong customer service skills, able to build and maintain productive and collaborative work relationships. *Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. *Experience providing office support with the ability to multi-task and prioritize. *Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills. *Able to work independently and support the functions of the unit with/without direction from the Assistant Dean.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Previous experience in Human Resources and knowledge of UNC-General Administration guidelines and University policies and regulations pertaining to personnel preferred. Experience using WordPress, PeopleSoft HR and Peopleadmin preferred.
