Responsibilities:

NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY announces a search for an Assistant Director of Bands in the Department of Music, part of the university's College of Arts, Media and Design.

The search committee will select a small group of candidates to visit campus, interview with music department staff and faculty, and conduct a student ensemble drawn from the university's wind ensemble, concert band and orchestra.

The duties of this position include:

Developing and maintaining musical excellence in the Pep Band: recruit musicians for the Pep Band; conduct Pep Band rehearsals; set performance and presentation policy for all Pep Band events; train student conductors and other student leaders to foster excellence in student musical and administrative leadership; conduct (or prepare student conductors for) performances at games; rehearse the Drum Line, develop high-quality smaller ensemble options to play at multiple games; arrange music for ensemble when necessary.

Providing all administrative support for the Pep Band: coordinate schedules with Athletics; manage the Pep Band budget; maintain uniform inventories and coordinate use and maintenance of all large ensemble instrument inventories; coordinate student participation at simultaneous games; coordinate Pep Band efforts at non-sporting events (parades, rallies, on-campus celebrations); organize Pep Band travel; maintain communication between Pep Band, Athletics, the Director of Bands, the Music Department, and Student Affairs; manage summer recruiting the band program during Welcome Days and Summer Orientation); serve as Advisor to Student Activity for the Pep Band; supervise maintenance of music department's large ensemble libraries.

Teach/Conduct the Concert Band: lead the band in all rehearsals and performances; choose repertoire; assist with the group auditions in the Fall; coordinate re-seating auditions in the Spring; assist students outside of class who require help learning the music; serve as Advisor to Student Activity for the Concert Band.

Administer the music department's scholarship program: manage marketing the scholarship to prospective students for orchestra, wind ensemble, concert band and Pep Band; manage all communication with prospective students (usually around 150 submissions); organize video submissions; coordinate with ensemble directors to review submissions; track continuity of participation in all assigned ensembles.

Provide musical and logistical assistance to the Director of Bands for high profile events (where the Music Department provides ceremonial music): Commencement; Academic Honors Convocation; PhD hooding; Convocation, Alumni events.

The music department's degree offerings include the B.A. in Music, a B.S. in Music Composition and Technology, a B.S. in Music Industry, a Masters in Music Industry Leadership, and a Performance Certificate in partnership with the New England Conservatory of Music.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a Masters degree or higher in conducting performance or Music Education with a concentration in conducting. We seek an inspirational leader who can maintain a high level of performance quality with large, non-auditioning ensembles (the Pep Band and Concert Band), work with Department of Musics Director of Bands, the universitys athletic department personnel and events management personnel in serving the needs of the students and the university, maintaining a degree of performance quality and student participation that brings pride and distinction to Northeastern University regionally, nationally and within the campus community.
