The Communications Associate is a dedicated communications professional with a strong desire to develop writing and editorial skills that support Northeastern's efforts to engage its donors at all levels. The Communications Associate, who reports to the Associate Director of Advancement Communications, interacts frequently with Northeastern's gift officers, other development staff and senior-level administrators, faculty, and donors.
This position will focus on drafting engaging annual fund appeals, overseeing the Advancement division's internal newsletter, creating social media content, and fulfilling various writing/editing duties as needed. S/he should have good writing skills, be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, and be willing to learn to develop creative ideas into compelling, donor-centric communications pieces.
As part of the communications team, the Communications Associate will serve in a service-oriented position, assisting the Advancement Communications team with writing, proofreading, and editing. S/he will also work with the Director of Digital Media to develop effective content for Twitter and Facebook platforms. Additionally, s/he will work with Advancement staff, faculty, and students to compile, draft, and edit content for the Advancement division's internal newsletter and for a wide variety of annual fund print and electronic fundraising appeals.
It is expected that the Communications Associate will write annual fund appeals that encourage alumni to make philanthropic gifts. Additionally, s/he will serve as editor of the Advancement division's internal newsletter and create content for Advancement's social media outlets.
At least two years of professional experience in nonprofit writing/communications, media relations, or a related field.
Good editing, proofreading, and writing skills.
The ability to work well with diverse audiences.
A strong desire to work effectively within a valued and a fast-paced communications operation of writers, designers, and video producers that is moving toward greater incorporation of the full range of print, multimedia, and online communications tools to meet strategic goals.
Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures related to the position, including: strong knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and matters of style; ability to write from the perspective of university leaders, donors, students, and donors for various audiences; ability to learn subject-specific terminology for use in developing written materials, particularly in the realm of the physical and life sciences; knowledge of when and how to use various channels of communication. Good organizational and project management skills.
A willingness to learn to craft persuasive, donor-centric appeals and other communications pieces is required.
