General Description of Position:

The successful candidate will assist in preparing and implementing field research projects at the KSU Southwest Research-Extension Center, Tribune. In addition, this person must be able to calibrate and operate various nutrient and pesticide application equipment, harvesters, planters, and general farm implements. Must have (or be willing to obtain) commercial pesticide applicators license. Other related duties include, but are not limited to, collecting soil and plant samples, making observations on crop growth and development, supervising temporary/student help, maintaining written and computer records and cooperating with other personnel in a team effort to maintain station facilities and equipment, conduct field days, and assist visiting scientists and graduate students.

Job Description:

Collects soil and plant samples from field experiment plots in order to obtain research data from agronomic experiments by using automated and manual soil probes, plant sampling and grain harvesting equipment using a knowledge of safe machine operations and the ability to accurately identify samples according to a written plot diagram. Agronomist will be available for consultation and will review the tasks.

Cooperate with other personnel in maintaining experiment station facilities, field research plots, and research equipment by employing proper maintenance practices. Supervision of temporary personnel may also be required. Agronomist will supervise and review tasks.

Enters and process research data from written forms into a microcomputer in order to facilitate data summarization and statistical analysis by using a knowledge of research techniques and experimental design and the ability to operate microcomputer hardware using spreadsheets and statistics software. Agronomist will be available for consultation and review work.

Applies specified treatments (including seed, fertilizer, pesticides, etc.) to research plots by following a written map in order to test research hypotheses by operating, calibrating, and maintaining planters, fertilizer and chemical application eqauipment using knowledge of machine operation and fertilizer/pesticide use and application while employing proper application procedures and safety practices. Must obtain and maintain Commercial Pesticide Applicators license. Will require collaboration and coordination with other personnel. Agronomist will be available for consultation and review of work.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED. Two years experience in applied agriculture, horticulture, or biology.

Valid drivers license upon employment. Posses or able to obtain Commercial, Category 10A Research and Demonstration pesticide applicators license issued by the Kansas State Board of Agriculture upon employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with farming practices preferred. Experience with agricultural field research highly desirable. Vocational training/experience with use of electronics, instrumentation, or computers desirable. Experience with the safe and proper use of pesticides desirable. Ability to work independently and desire to learn research methods. Knowledge of the hazards, proper use and effects of herbicides and other pesticides. Be meticulous and legible in record keeping. Ability to operate vehicles with standard transmission. Ability to follow detailed instructions, both oral and written. Ability to keep accurate, legible records. Knowledge and skills using electronics, computers, and computer software. Ability to work with professional personnel. Good motor skills and physical health. Ability to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing. B.S. degree in Agronomy or related field. Physical Activities and Environmental Conditions: The nature of this job requires good motor skills and physical health.
