Responsibilities:

The International Student and Scholar Advisor serves as a primary contact point in the collection, evaluation and issuance of Certificates of Eligibility as requested by the Admissions units. The Advisor provides a wide range of advising services to international students and scholars in non-immigrant visa classifications as they are admitted into various programs of study or research. The Advisor serves in the official federally authorized ISSI capacities of Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). The Advisor reviews and evaluates forms, requests and related inquiries in order to determine and issue the appropriate initial or transfer Certificate of Eligibility documents for matriculating international students or appointed research scholars. Respond to admissions-related inquiries from abroad as appropriate, as well as from University Admissions units or other staff from various departments. Observe and execute a precise schedule of SEVIS reportable events and registrations as required by SEVIS compliance and current immigration regulations. Engage in daily immigration advising referring to a range of federal regulations and procedures pertinent to specific SEVIS nonimmigrant visa classifications. This position will also monitor non-SEVIS visa classifications during their presence on-campus. Recommend, approve and track periods of pre/post-Completion Optional Practical Training, Curricular Practical Training and Academic Training, program extensions, Cap Gap and STEM extensions. The Advisor will follow, guide and advise international students and scholars on the resolution of issues regarding maintenance of valid non-immigrant status and retaining eligibility for a variety of benefits during or after completion of academic or research programs. The Advisor will also support the planning and implementation of orientation programs as they pertain to Immigration Check-in of initial F and validation of initial J-1 records and serve as a resource in committees and working groups for all developments connected to the functionality of SEVIS related systems.

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree required. A minimum of 3-5 years of formal experience in international educational exchange is required; substantial knowledge and at least 1 year of practical experience in US Federal regulation governing non-immigrant visa categories and SEVIS is also strongly preferred. Commensurate expertise in international admissions and international student advising, employment and compliance is also highly preferable; cross-cultural experience is advantageous. Fluency in other languages, experience living abroad is highly desirable. A proven ability to work effectively with students, scholars, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members who represent a broad range of cultural backgrounds and perspectives is important. Strong analytical and organizational skills, ability to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced environment, as well as the ability to work well under pressure and appropriate handle confidential material. Supervisory experience and strong computer skills in major applications are a plus. U.S. Citizenship or US permanent resident status required.
