PROFESSOR AND HEAD, DEPARTMENT OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES
The School of College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources and the University of Connecticut continue a momentum of unprecedented growth as evidenced by significantly increased research expenditures, and a 29-year state funded $3.5B initiative to enhance the physical infrastructure as well as research and teaching activities. In response to transformative new partnerships with industry and a significant investment in STEM infrastructure and education at UConn, the University has successfully recruited more than 450 faculty over the past four years.
The Department offers a bachelor’s level degree in Allied Health Sciences, with possible concentrations in Public Health and Health Promotion, Health Sciences, Health Care Administration, and Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety. Additionally, there are three accredited professional Bachelor of Science majors in Dietetics, Diagnostic Genetic Sciences, and Medical Laboratory Sciences. Our interdisciplinary graduate program offers two MS degree programs in Health Promotion Sciences and Health Care Genetics as well as a Graduate Certificate in Health Promotion and Health Education. We are anticipating approval of a PhD program in Health Promotion Sciences. The new Department Head must take a leadership role in implementation of this new PhD program.
The Department of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Connecticut seeks to hire a dynamic and visionary individual as Department Head. The Head will lead a diverse faculty who are recognized nationally and internationally for their interdisciplinary research and graduate training in health promotion sciences. The Head will also oversee accredited professional programs in Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Diagnostic Genetic Sciences. Synergistic interactions between Departments throughout the University are required and provide a strong foundation for excellence at this Carnegie Foundation Research University.
The position is a 10-month, tenure track, administrative appointment, and applicants must meet University requirements for appointment at the rank of Full Professor. Maintenance of a research, teaching and/or extension program is strongly encouraged. As the departmental administrative officer, the Head reports directly to the Dean.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leadership and coordination of undergraduate, certificate and graduate teaching, research and cooperative extension education and outreach programs. Administrative responsibilities for academic affairs, departmental personnel, budget matters and physical facilities. Establishment and coordination of relationships with relevant research centers, public health organizations, healthcare industries, accrediting agencies, alumni and the citizens of the State of Connecticut. Implementation of departmental programs and capital improvements. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
Candidates must have the following qualifications
- Earned a Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent degree in a health promotion/public health or a related discipline, A record of outstanding nationally and internationally recognized scholarship achievements and professional activities related to teaching, research and/or community service that will qualify the individual to be tenured at the rank of Professor in the Department of Allied Health Sciences Knowledge and/or experience with clinical education components of health profession programs suited to direct an academic department engaged in teaching, research, and service activities at a major land-grant University.
Preference will be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
- Prior administrative experience, especially if at the department head level or higher Experience recruiting and retaining highly qualified faculty, graduate and undergraduate students; particularly those who are traditionally underrepresented. One or more credentials in a health profession.
Appointment Terms: An August 23, 2016 start date is preferred, however a January, 2017 may also be a possibility.
