Northern Michigan University, located in Marquette, Michigan, is a dynamic four-year, public, comprehensive university that has grown its reputation based on its award-winning leadership programs, cutting-edge technology initiatives and nationally recognized academic programs.
Northern Michigan has a population of about 7,900 undergraduate and graduate students. It offers over 170 degree programs, including 25 graduate programs. More than 75 percent of NMU's 300-plus full-time faculty members have doctorates or the highest degree in their fields, and a hallmark of the NMU experience is that full-time faculty members teach at all levels - freshmen through graduate courses. NMU’s 1,100 employees view helping students succeed as not only a university priority, but a personal goal.

The NMU President’s Committee on Diversity is represented by 25 students, faculty and staff. The committee is charged with the six following tasks:
1) To create and implement action plans to promote diversity within the framework of the university’s mission and strategic plan.
2) To identify, evaluate, and respond to diversity issues.
3) To identify, plan, and support activities that will encourage, promote, and recognize diversity on campus.
4) To evaluate the effectiveness of the Committee’s efforts and make adjustments to continually improve, including if necessary, recommending changes to the Committee’s charge.
5) To direct the President’s attention to issues regarding diversity on campus and in the surrounding communities.
6) To submit a report that enumerates and evaluates the Committee’s activities and makes recommendations, including recommendations regarding resource allocation, to the President by June 1 each year.
There are many Northern Michigan University units and departments that work to cultivate diversity efforts. These departments include the President’s Office, Equal Opportunity Office, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Center for Student Enrichment, Multicultural Education and Resources Center, Center for Native American Studies, and International Programs.
