SUNY Canton

State University of New York College Of Technology at Canton

SUNY Canton was originally chartered in 1906 as the first postsecondary, two-year college in New York and is one of five Colleges of Technology in the SUNY System. The college prides itself on providing an applied education that prepares its students for careers.

The College offers 23 career-driven bachelor’s degree, 22 associate degree and 7 one-year professional certificate programs. All academic programs are designed in a ladder curriculum, meaning students who start in a certificate or associate program can apply their first years of study toward their associate or bachelor’s degree. Programs and courses are taught face-to-face and online.

Faculty members are noted for their professional real-world experience in addition to their academic credentials. Students learn from engineers; crime scene investigators and former police officers; nurses and doctors; lawyers and entrepreneurs; programmers; in addition to novelists, photographers and videographers. The student to faculty ratio is 19 to 1.

Among its many distinctions, the college has been listed in U.S. News and World Report’s Top Regional Colleges in the Best Colleges Edition; it has earned a Military Friendly Designation from G.I. Jobs magazine and has been highlighted extensively for its science, technology, engineering and math curricula.

Dr. Zvi Szafran is the College’s president. He said SUNY Canton’s fundamental strength is that it is uniquely poised to benefit from the country’s increasing demand for graduates with strong applied skills. In upcoming years, the College will be exploring adding new programs in Mechatronics, Agricultural Management, Agricultural Technology, Hospitality Management and Video Game Design.

The College's 14 athletic teams compete as provisional members of the NCAA as well as the USCAA. In the past two years, the college has added five sports and increased the number of student-athletes from 126 to more than 300.

SUNY Canton has a population of approximately 3,400 undergraduate students. As a residential college, the student body is drawn primarily from a pool of recent high school graduates. The College’s applied programs also draw a steady population of non-traditional and commuter students. The student community is comprised of a diverse mix of races and ethnicities, which adds to the unique and rich cultural learning experience.

The campus consists of twenty buildings that fit perfectly into the North Country landscape, including:

  • Five classroom buildings with specialized labs for innovative hands-on learning.
  • Five residential buildings, including the Grasse River Suites residence hall, offering students single-rooms in apartment-style suites.
  • A Convocation Athletic and Recreation Center featuring an ice rink, pool, fitness center, and field house.
  • The Southworth Library Learning Commons, serves as the technological center and research hub of campus.
  • The Richard W. Miller Campus Center offering recreational and student access space for clubs and organizations.
  • Miles of beautiful trails suitable for walking, running, biking or skiing surround the campus.
  • Two scenic footbridges connect the campus with the Village of Canton.

SUNY Canton is one of two colleges in Canton. Its closest neighbor is St. Lawrence University. There are also two colleges in nearby Potsdam: SUNY Potsdam, home of the Crane School of Music; and Clarkson University. The four institutions are linked by the Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley, a consortium sharing library services and providing cross-registration for students and staff. The consortium was created as a regional multipurpose organization to expand the number and variety of educational opportunities for students, faculty and the community.
