Augustana College of Illinois
About Augustana College of Illinois
Augustana College educates the whole person. Founded in 1860 by Swedish settlers, Augustana College is a selective, independent college of the liberal arts and sciences, enrolling about 2,500 undergraduate students. Our home is a beautiful, 115-acre campus adjacent to the Mississippi River in Illinois. We’re a Phi Beta Kappa school and admission here is generally rated as "more selective." Our student-faculty ration is approximately 12 to 1.
Student profile: Our students are an impressive and multifaceted group. Their median ACT score is about 26 (the converted SAT would be about 1200); 25 percent of them participate in music ensembles, 40 percent participate in intercollegiate athletics, and over 85 percent of them have volunteered in the community. Students of color constitute 15 percent of the student body. While most of our students are from the states of the Upper Midwest, our current student body does represent most states and 20 other nations. Over half of our students participate in study abroad during their four years here.
Faculty profile: 94 percent of Augustana’s faculty has their terminal degree. Our faculty is comprised of active teacher-scholars whose efforts have been recognized with Fulbright fellowships, National Science Foundation grants, and the Illinois Professor of the Year award.
Alumni success: 95 percent of graduates are employed or pursuing an advance degree within a year of graduation. 87 percent of recent alumni pursuing advanced degrees were accepted into their first-choice or second-choice graduate school.
Curriculum: Augustana features over 60 fields of study and a core curriculum in the liberal arts. Nearly all of our students participate in a guided research project. With our Augie Choice program, every Augustana student receives $2,000 to support a qualifying hands-on learning experience of their choice, such as international study, research or an internship.
Community life: Rock Island is part of a larger urban area known as the Quad Cities that sits adjacent to the Mississippi River in Illinois and Iowa. With a diverse population of 400,000, the Quad Cities provides Augustana faculty and students with ready access to countless cultural resources and opportunities that encompass many ethnic backgrounds and faith traditions. Restaurants, grocery stores, and other businesses also reflect the diversity of the area. Our faculty actively participates in the civic life of the Quad Cities, serving in more than 180 different community organizations. In 2007 the U.S. Conference of Mayors named the area America's "Most Livable Small City." Situated midway between Chicago and St. Louis, the Quad Cities is home to major corporations such as John Deere and Alcoa as well as excellent hospitals.
