Working Title: Assistant/Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success

Posting Information: Western Carolina University seeks applications for the position of Associate/Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success (AVCSS). The AVCSS will report to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, will be a key member of the leadership team in Academic Affairs, and will serve on the Council of Deans. The target date for appointment is July 1, 2013.

The AVCSS will oversee the Registrar's Office, transfer support programs, the One-Stop Student Service Center, Academic Advising, and various student success programs including First Year Experience, Writing and Learning Commons, the Math Tutoring Center, Student Support Services, and Disability Services. He/she will also be responsible for Summer Sessions. Accordingly, the AVCSS will have significant interaction with departments and leaders in undergraduate and graduate student recruitment, NCAA athletics, and administrative and student services campus-wide.
Western Carolina University enrolls about 9600 undergraduate and graduate students. It is part of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system, long recognized for educational excellence. WCU embraces a student-centered culture as reflected by the Carnegie Foundation designation as a community-engaged university. WCU is committed to increasing diversity of its faculty, staff, and students and strengthening sensitivity to diversity throughout the institution. Its The main campus of WCU is in Cullowhee, North Carolina, about 50 miles southwest of Asheville. The university also delivers some degree programs in other nearby parts of the state, primarily at a new facility in Biltmore Park near Asheville and in Cherokee. Western Carolina University is in a beautiful location framed by mountains and rivers in one of the most ecologically diverse areas of the nation, with four-season recreational opportunities. The University has a strong commitment to serving the economic and community development of the region and state.

The AVCSS, in collaboration with faculty, staff, and leadership across the university, is specifically responsible for:
* Leading the university in increasing retention and graduation rates at both strategic and operational levels.
* Championing and leading in the development, implementation, and evaluation of student success programs.
* Leading in exploration, innovation, and adaptation of student success best practices.
* Creating and advocating for student success across the university in support of and to enhance diversity.
* Positioning summer school as a student success program with offerings, policies, and incentives to permit students to make more rapid progress toward graduation.
* Overseeing academic intervention programs for at-risk students.
* Integrating practices that have been successful with special populations to support all students of the University.
* Coordinating and supporting academic advising processes and programs.
* Partnering with Faculty Senate and Student Government Association on university-wide student success initiatives, as appropriate.
* Working closely with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs to coordinate holistic student learning and support.
* Serving as a liaison with other state institutions and the General Administration of the University of North Carolina system on issues of student success, retention, and graduation.

Appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Vice Chancellor level with competitive compensation based on qualifications and experience.

Minimum Training & Experience Requirements: Required qualifications include an earned terminal degree, faculty experience in higher education, and administrative experience. The successful candidate should have a record to qualify for tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

Degree must be from an appropriately accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications: Furthermore, applicants should possess effective oral and written communication skills; the ability to work effectively with diverse groups, and positive experience in promoting student success. Preferred qualifications include administrative experience in a position related to student success, including planning, supporting and enhancing student diversity, assessment, and budgetary authority.
