Working Title: Assistant/Associate Vice Chancellor for International and Extended Programs

Posting Information: Western Carolina University invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for International and Extended Programs for appointment July 1, 2013.

The AVC will be a key member of the leadership team in the Division of Academic Affairs and will report to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. He/she will be a member of the Council of Deans. Overseeing a staff of approximately 30, the AVC will provide vision and leadership in recruiting international students, overseeing a successful Intensive English Program, developing international partnerships, promoting short- and long-term study abroad programs, supporting the growth of distance, continuing education, and on-line educational programs and academic programs offered at locations in addition to Cullowhee, and encouraging entrepreneurial and innovative educational program development and delivery. International and Extended Programs is a new administrative unit being formed by the merger of two independent units at WCU (Educational Outreach and International Programs and Services).

With the oversight of International and Extended Programs (IEP), the University is committed to growing programs promoting degree completion by members of the military, veterans, and adult learners throughout North Carolina. IEP is charged to grow the number of distance and on-line programs offered by WCU including at WCU's Center in Cherokee, North Carolina, to promote partnerships between WCU and the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. IEP collaborates campus-wide with both academic and administrative areas to market and support non-credit educational offerings in continuing education, and professional and personal enrichment. IEP will be a catalyst for entrepreneurial and innovative educational programs, with centralized funding to incentivize such efforts by faculty.
The AVC will be responsible for bringing vision and depth of experience to the development of a comprehensive approach to international enrollment management and related international student service and campus life experience, for encouraging international partnerships and exchange agreements, and for promoting short- and long-term study abroad opportunities for WCU students. The AVC will provide leadership in international student recruitment and retention, cultural transition and student success in both academic and experiential learning endeavors, as well as assure that the University maintains full compliance with SEVP/SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Program/Information System) and other government requirements. The AVC will inspire innovation in incorporating international students in the broad spectrum of university life and in creating cross-cultural experiences for international and domestic students. The AVC will strengthen existing alliances and create new collaborative relationships with academic colleges and with other university units such as Residential Life, Career Services and Cooperative Education, Center for Service Learning, student activities, cultural centers, legal affairs and alumni relations.

While it is recognized that a candidate may not have equal qualifications and experience in both external and international programs, some experience in both extended and international programs is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Terminal degree in an academic discipline and experience as a faculty member.
2. Five years of administrative experience with successful supervisory and budgetary experience in an academic setting.
3. Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse constituencies, including students, faculty, administrators and external groups including business leaders, professional associations, and community leaders.
4. Collaborative leadership style with the ability to empower staff members and work as an equal partner with other campus leaders.

Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience in or demonstrated potential to lead international programs with ability to interact with international institutions and cultural competence for communication and negotiation with potential partners.
2. Experience in or demonstrated potential to lead distance, online, and continuing education programs.
3. Entrepreneurial experience and vision.
4. Administrative experience in the public sector.
