The Office of Information Technology at West Virginia University is seeking a LAN Analyst/Network Engineer (Professional Technologist 3). Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Network Operations, this position performs professional work, which includes development, implementation and maintenance of the WVU Campus Backbone of all Local Area Networks (LAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN), and provides support for WVU regional campuses at Potomac State, WVUIT, and WVU Parkersburg. This position requires a professional with a solid technical background, a commitment to excellence and a demonstrated appreciation for the importance of customer service in a dynamic environment.
A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of higher education, work experience in related areas, and/or applicable certifications is required. Cisco certification is desirable. Applicants must have 4 years of experience with data communications or networking, 2 years of experience with Cisco networks, and 2 years of experience in a Windows environment.
Additional responsibilities include: design, plan and install network infrastructure equipment. Expert working knowledge including the ability to setup, configure, upgrade, manage, and troubleshoot Cisco routers, switches, VPN concentrators, firewalls, 802.11 wireless access points; understanding of transport protocols, routing protocols, and security/authentication protocols at all layers of the OSI model with emphasis on TCP/IP are essential; must have knowledge of networking features and protocols such as VTP, Etherchannel, 802.1Q trunking, QoS, and multicast. In-depth knowledge of routing protocols particularly BGP and EIGRP. Maintain BGP peering with neighboring autonomous systems, and plan BGP routing policies; maintain network border equipment, including configuring and monitoring WVU’s connection to the Internet and Internet 2. Provide redundant active/active configurations and connections to ensure high availability with minimal down time. Understanding of IPv6 design, subnetting, configuration and implementation; experience in maintaining border router communication and security. Coordinate protocols for operations within the WVU system for voice, data, and video needs. Works with other departments, customers, vendors, and partners to provide efficient fault resolution of network and systems outages; maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for the WVU campus backbone, LAN and WAN segments. Assists in the development and implementation of networking standards for the WVU campus.
