English - Full Time Instructor (2 Positions)
Definition:
The English Department at Mission College is now accepting applications for a full time, tenure-track instructor who shares our excitement for teaching and our commitment to excellence in the lower division education of both majors and non-majors. We are looking for someone with a willingness to help our department grow and who will enjoy working with our diverse student body. Applicants who possess the knowledge, skills, ability, and life experiences to address the cultural and educational needs of a linguistically and culturally diverse student population are encouraged to apply.
One of the positions will be assigned to be the English-Puente Instructor. Puente classes provide a supportive and stimulating environment for students to build confidence in their writing skills through an exploration of the Chicano/Latino experience in a learning community structure.
The second English position will be a mid-year hire with an expected start date on January 2013.
Mission College serves a region of the San Francisco Bay area that includes urban neighborhoods, business centers and residential communities. Assignment:
This is a full-time 10-month tenure track position that begins in Fall 2012. Instructional Assignments may include day and/or evening classes, Monday thru Saturday, as needed and rotate among the English faculty. It is expected that over several semesters all levels of English offered at the college from developmental to transfer will be taught. Work location: Mission College.
Salary and Benefits:
- Anticipated Hiring Range: $48,891 to $76,087 annually, is based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in English, literature, comparative literature or composition OR
- Bachelor’s degree in English, literature, comparative literature or composition AND
- Master's degree in linguistics,TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading,
creative writing or journalism OR - Possess a valid California community College Instructor’s credential in the discipline OR
- The equivalent of the above.
- Degrees must be obtained from an accredited institution. Candidates with degrees not identical to the required state or local qualifications must apply for equivalency by completing the online equivalency form which is part of the application package. This form must be completed for employment consideration.
- Candidates with foreign degrees must provide official certification of equivalency to U.S. degrees by a certified U.S. credential review service. Simple translation of the language on foreign diplomas, transcripts, coursework, or similar will NOT suffice; thus, will cause the application packet to be judged as incomplete.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, counsel or work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:
- Teach learning community (Puente Project).
- Co-ordinates and attends Statewide Puente activities.
- Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation, in-class activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students outside of class, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught and other efforts related to the teaching of the assigned classes.
- Maintain accurate class and other records conforming with state requirements and stated District and college needs.
- Submit, when due, all necessary reports such as attendance, grade reports, rosters and class schedules.
- Follow course outlines as filed in the appropriate instruction offices.
- Maintain 3.4 office hours each week.
- Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
- Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.
- Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.
- Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the member’s area of expertise.
- Work cooperatively within the college community.
- Complete 85 hours of institutional responsibilities per semester. Examples of institutional responsibilities include assisting the department chair in curriculum development, serving on division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; and participating in appropriate professional development activities.
- Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
- Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
- Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.
- Teach Puente classes.
