Reporting to the Associate Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer, the Assistant Vice President for the Office of University Planning has a leadership role in matters of campus aesthetics and the preservation of Virginia Tech’s architectural heritage. The Assistant Vice President will have a dotted reporting line relationship to the Vice President for Administrative Services as the university planner.

In 2010, Virginia Tech announced the merger of the offices of Real Estate Management and the University Architect to create the Office of Campus Planning, Space and Real Estate, which will provide guidance through the professional disciplines and core competencies of architectural design, campus planning, land planning/landscape architecture, space programming and analysis, geographic information systems, integrated sustainable planning, and real estate management.
The Assistant Vice President for the Office of University Planning is a highly visible role that interacts with top-level administration of the university in strategic planning, long range physical planning and development, and development of the capital outlay program for the future benefit of the university. The AVP is responsible for developing and implementing the Campus Master Plan, coordinating university efforts to assure that facility and space needs are being met, and ensuring that the direction of capital project program planning is integrated with long range physical planning. The AVP collaborates with university partners to identify strategic property acquisitions to advance the university’s mission and future growth needs, and provides oversight of all real estate matters and transactions. This position will be responsible for providing effective vision, leadership and strategic direction for the development and management of new space management policies, as well as cultivate an appreciation among institutional leadership the importance of the university effectively managing its space.
The office of the AVP provides guidance through the professional disciplines and core competencies of architectural design, campus planning, land planning/landscape architecture, space programming and analysis, integrated sustainable planning, and real estate management.
The ideal candidate will possess a professional Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture degree and will be registered as an architect in Virginia, or able to be so within 12 months. A combination of education and experience in a closely related discipline will be considered. In addition, the following experiences and attributes are desired: comprehensive knowledge of all phases of master planning, long-range development planning, and space planning; significant architectural design and sustainable design experience; significant management experience in several of the following areas: architectural design, planning, land planning/landscape architecture, space management, integrated sustainable planning, and/or real estate management. The successful candidate will be a strategic and visionary thinker with a strong collaborative leadership style, exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to manage negotiation processes for various business transactions. Experience in master planning for an institution of higher education, advanced understanding of construction processes, procedures, and methods, and demonstrated knowledge and experience with GIS are preferred.
