VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

PRESIDENT

TIDEWATER COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach, Virginia

The Virginia Community College System invites applications and nominations for the Presidency of Tidewater Community College. Tidewater Community College (TCC) serves the 1.1 million residents of the South Hampton Roads area with four fully comprehensive campuses and five regional centers. Founded in 1968, the college is the largest provider of higher education and workforce development training and services in the region, serving 45,860 credit students that generated 22,702 annual full-time equivalent students, more than 1,000 employers with workforce development training and services for some 28,500 students.  The college's credit enrollment has nearly doubled (98% increase) since 1997-98.

TCC's service area-the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach-is located in scenic, historic America's First Region, Hampton Roads, Virginia. South Hampton Roads is known for its many waterways, and the industry and attractions that access to water generates. Beautiful beaches, major port and shipyard activity, and the largest concentration of naval forces in the world contribute to a thriving economy and rich maritime history. The area is a hub for business, banking, and a variety of arts and cultural activities, as well as high-end shopping, dining, entertainment, and night life.

TCC delivers 150 associate degrees and certificates across 13 academic divisions. Eleven of the college's academic programs are nationally accredited. TCC's commitment to academic excellence and intellectual rigor is best exemplified by the 360 full-time teaching faculty and some 1,200 adjunct faculty members. The instructional faculty are supported by a dedicated corps of 130 administrative and professional faculty, 500 full-time staff, and 1,000 part-time employees.

TCC is financially healthy with an operating budget of approximately $135 million. The College has two affiliated foundations: the Educational Foundation which has over $7.5 million dollars in assets and the Real Estate Foundation holds assets worth approximately $61 million. TCC's facilities include 43 buildings with over 1.6 million square feet on multiple campuses and off-campus sites.  Additionally, a half dozen capital projects are in various stages of design or construction.

With the retirement of Dr. Deborah DiCroce after 14 years of outstanding service as president, TCC is seeking its next president. The college seeks an accomplished, strong, goal-oriented, visionary leader who is forward-thinking and capable of "thinking outside of the box." The Local College Board and college community have identified several areas of potential growth or emphasis including: a) continuing to improve retention, transfer, and graduation rates; b) continuing outreach and building partnerships at the local, state, and national levels with educational, industry and community organizations; c) increasing TCC's presence in regional workforce development, d) improving levels of full-time teaching faculty; and e) working with various stakeholders to continue diversifying TCC's funding base and attempting to moderate the impact of rising costs on students and their families.

Ideal candidates will be proven leaders who have an earned doctorate and have demonstrated successful higher education and academic administrative experience at or above the president level or the equivalent. Multi-campus community college presidential experience is preferred. The candidate must have proven leadership abilities along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. He or she must possess a clear commitment to educational excellence, technological innovation in education, diversity, and a background of demonstrated support for regional economic development and workforce training. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to work with public leaders, multiple governmental bodies, and the community at large, with the skills to continue and expand previously successful fundraising initiatives. The candidate must have a broad vision for academic leadership throughout a geographically extensive service area, together with the skills, energy, and commitment for its implementation.

The salary range is $188,427 - $257,186.

The search will remain open until the position is filled.

To be considered for the initial screening, candidates should submit application materials by March 1, 2012 via our website at www.vccs.edu/tccsearch
