Chemical Lab Manager/Chemical Hygiene & Safety Coordinator

Summary of Duties: This staff position will work under the direction of the chemistry stockroom manager to prepare reagents and equipment in support of student learning. This person will coordinate the chemical hygiene plan for the Chemistry Department, the College of Science and Health.

Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:

-Prepare reagents and equipment for the General Chemistry teaching laboratory. 40%

-Prepare and maintains a chemical hygiene plan in coordination with the Stockroom Manager and Chemistry Department Chair. 20%

-Take primary responsibility for chemical waste disposal and maintain chemical safety programs such as proper chemical inventory, labeling and storage procedures, chemical material disposal, chemical or hazmat spill preparedness and clean-up, chemical implications for fire protection, and any Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) chemical safety compliance programs; assists with the preparation of standard operating procedures; communicates this information to newcomers to campus. 20%

-Maintain MSDS sheets for chemicals stored in the Chemistry Stockroom and laboratories. 10%

-Prepare reagents and equipment for the analytical teaching laboratory and perform other job related duties as assigned. 10%

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited institution with a BS degree in chemistry or a related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: -Basic knowledge of good laboratory practices.
-Knowledge of chemical safety procedures.
-Knowledge of safety standards for the use of laboratory equipment, facilities, and supplies.
-Knowledge of chemical receiving and waste disposal procedures.
-Skills in handling of chemical waste.
-Ability to prepare chemical reagents.
-Ability to organize and maintain a chemical hygiene plan.
-Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
