The Department of Education at the University of Saint Joseph invites applications for a tenure track faculty position (rank open) to begin August 2014. The ideal candidate will be an expert in preparing teachers of English and in the teacher preparation standards of the National Council of Teachers of English. S/he will have expertise in general methods of teaching at the secondary level, knowledge of Common Core State Standards, an in-depth understanding of methods of teaching, an understanding of planning through backward design and using constructivist approaches, expertise in assessing content understanding in the inclusive classroom, a commitment to preparing teacher candidates for the urban school, and active involvement with public schools, PreK-12.
Teaching responsibilities include using best practices in teaching introductory and advanced undergraduate and graduate teacher licensure courses at the secondary levels in the Department of Education. The person in this position will serve as the secondary program director and be responsible for secondary accreditation program reports as part of workload responsibilities.
University and school expectations include developing and maintaining an active research agenda in line with the Boyer Model of faculty scholarship, as well as service to the department, school and the university through participation on committee work. Service activities are expected to be consistent with teaching and scholarship. Grant writing is expected to involve faculty and students in addressing local school district needs. The position includes shared responsibility for all phases of the advising, instruction, and program development and evaluation process. There is opportunity to assume rotational responsibility as the department chair.
Qualifications include an earned doctorate in an appropriate field, in-depth experience in teaching and/or supervision in middle/secondary school settings, and experience in teacher preparation or school-based professional development. The School of Education is especially interested in recruiting a diverse candidate pool.
