The Department of Special Education at the University of Saint Joseph invites applications for a tenure-track faculty Chair position (2-2 load), at the level of Associate/Full Professor, to begin August 18, 2014. The mission of the Department of Special Education is to prepare highly effective practitioners whose work is grounded in current research, theory, and evidence-based practice. This is accomplished through close faculty mentorship, rigorous coursework, and supervised fieldwork. Candidates develop professional skills and dispositions to effect positive change for students with specialized learning needs.
The successful candidate for this position will have expertise and teaching responsibilities in one or more of the following areas: evidence-based practices associated with the written language process and the identification and remediation of written language disorders; special education curriculum adaptations and universal design; remedial and inclusive program development for students with mild disabilities.
Administrative responsibilities as Chair of the Department include supervision of undergraduate and graduate programs in special education, lead activities related to continuation of national and state accreditation, and supporting/expanding existing University-school and agency partnerships.
Qualifications include an earned doctorate, from an accredited institution, in special education or closely related field; a successful record of higher education teaching, scholarship, and leadership experience that warrants appointment at the Associate/Full Professor level; a minimum of three years experience working with K-12 special education students and their families; successful experience teaching undergraduate and graduate candidates studying special education;, and,
a demonstrated commitment to collaboration in University and community contexts. The Department of Special Education is especially interested in recruiting candidates with established lines of research and evidence of a strong commitment to social justice.
