Job Summary: An area coordinator has responsibility for the management of a residential environment consisting of single gender (male) and/or coed residence halls and/or apartments housing 500-750 students. The area coordinator attempts to establish in the area an environment that will allow the residents to accomplish their academic goals and to participate in co-curricular personal growth experiences in addition to assisting in the developing a sense of community. The area coordinator serves as a primary representative of the University, and more specifically of the dean's office in the apartments. Area coordinators serve as coordinators/facilitators for several student development, non-residential life experiences administered by the dean's office. The area coordinator reports to the associate dean for residence life.

Qualifications and Skills: One or more years of experience in residence life or housing as a graduate student or full-time professional.

Solid understanding of residential life/housing operations.

A desire to work closely with students.

Excellent supervisory skills.

A demonstrated knowledge of college student development theory and residential life.

An understanding of problem solving skills, conflict management, time management, the ability to handle multiple responsibilities, crisis management, and basic computer skills.

Essential Functions: Staff Supervision - Supervises and evaluates an undergraduate staff of sixteen to twenty resident assistants and up to three head residents. Meet weekly with head residents and building staff.

Summer School - Recruit, select, supervise and evaluate an undergraduate staff of up to ten summer school resident assistants. Oversee all summer housing room inspections, damage billing, and other requests of the Office of Undergraduate Student Housing. Primary responsibilities to one area coordinator.

Staff Selection - Selects and trains the residence life student staff of fifty-four in cooperation with the other area coordinators.

Staff Training - Plans and implements the fall and spring semester training workshops and the in-service staff training. Serves as part of the instructional staff for the seven-week credit-bearing course taught each spring in collaboration with the Westhampton College staff.

Individual Advising/Referrals - Counsels students as they encounter various developmental and/or adjustment difficulties and makes appropriate referrals.

Judicial Process Officer - Facilitates the development of an environment that stimulates student responsibility and accountability within the residential community. Serves as the hearing officer for discipline cases related to the assigned residential areas.

Programming - Promotes programming for the residential communities in the area designed to satisfy components of the Programming Model. Works with students to maintain diversity in program development efforts with an emphasis on co-curricular programs.

Group Advising - Is responsible for advising a student group(s) as assigned by the dean's office.

Evaluation - Evaluates student staff once each semester.

Facility Support - Support Housekeeping and Physical Plant Services in maintaining healthy and safe living conditions within assigned residential environment. Encourages staff and students to develop respect for the living environment.

Policy - Functions as part of the dean's office team assisting with policy decisions that affect resident students. In addition, A) interprets college policies and procedures to students and staff; B) reviews situations which merit exceptions to existing policy; C) supports the college discipline system and judicial process.

Administrative Tasks - Completes administrative tasks as necessary and requested.

On-Call/Emergencies/Crisis Intervention - Participate in the campus wide on-call duty system. Provides support and assistance when necessary in response to campus crisis. Maintains availability and accessibility to residents and student staff. Considered essential staff during campus emergencies.

Office Hours - Maintains office hours Monday-Friday (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) to allow for interaction with students and other staff. Maintains availability and accessibility to residents and student staff.

Professional Development - The dean's office encourages active participation in professional associations through attendance at annual meetings, reading of journals and newsletters, and presenting at conferences.

Richmond College Experience - Provides leadership for, supports, and participates in various college events such as receptions, dinners, socials, and traditional ceremonies.

Involvement in University Community - Maintains broad interests and active participation in college life and other college activities. Establishes good working relationships with other departments within the University.
