Position Summary: The Water Institute of UNC wishes to recruit a Research Assistant Professor or Research Associate Professor. The successful candidate will serve as Associate Director for Research of the Water Institute at UNC, working alongside Professor Jamie Bartram (Director), Professor Pete Kolsky (Associate Director for Teaching and Learning), the Water Institute Office Manager, Water Institute research team members and other Institute staff. The Water Institute core research team presently includes five post-doctoral researchers, three PhD students and six Masters students and is growing. Background: The context of the appointment includes (1) the adoption by UNC of 'Water' as the University's first ever campus-wide theme, for the academic years 2012-13 and 2013-14; (2) the successful completion of two years of operations by the Water Institute at UNC with a substantive and rapidly expanding portfolio of activity including research and a highly-regarded annual conference; (3) broad expertise in and commitment to water-related issues across the University, with around 30 active researchers working on water-related issues among UNC faculty and (4) networks of collaborators in countries on all continents. Position Details: The incumbent will conduct and guide research in their area of expertise. They will lead and manage the identification, development, and submission of proposals aligned with Institute focus areas in cooperation with partners within and beyond UNC. In cooperation with the Director they will oversee implementation of the overall research effort of the Institute, and develop and maintain strong and effective partnerships with collaborators. In cooperation with the Director and Associate Director for Teaching and Learning, the incumbent will support of the implementation and progressive refinement of the Institute's strategic plan. The successful applicant will also teach and mentor graduate and/or undergraduate students and guide post-doctoral researchers in methods and applications within their domain(s) of expertise, as required.
Education Requirements: A Doctoral degree in public or environmental health or a related field.
Qualification and Experience: A minimum of five years post-doctoral experience is required, with evidence of progressive career and scholarly development in that time. Applications are sought from individuals with expertise that aligns with one or more of the WaSH focus areas of the Institute. These include: * Monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment * Water safety (including water safety plans, technology development and assessment, small systems, HWTS and water testing) * WaSH-related Challenges of the southeastern US. * Inter-sectoral action on WaSH * Adapting to water scarcity and climate change * Urban sanitation * Sustainability and 'Enabling Environments' * Role of Information in Regulation, policy and practice Applicants should have documented evidence for capacities in project conceptualization and successful (ie awarded) proposal writing, serving as project principal investigator; mentoring of junior researchers; report and journal manuscript-writing; and preparation and delivery of scholarly presentations. Experience in working on multiple parallel projects and/or complex, multi-country projects is desirable. Evidence of working successfully in interdisciplinary teams, through directly participating in research or facilitating the work of other researchers is preferred. Fluent written and spoken English is a requirement. Ability to work in other languages is desirable. Significant international experience (at least two years total in lower and/or middle income country settings is required; at least two years total in high income country settings (which may include the USA) is preferred. Experience in researching or working within more than two continents is desirable. At least five years' experience in an academic or equivalent (research-focused)setting is required. Substantive experience working in, or cooperating with, other sectors (NGO, government, private sector, UN agencies etc.) is preferred.
